Situated at the shortest sea crossing to the continent, the Dover Castle has not been called the "Key to England" for nothing - its defensive significance utill the middle of the 20th century was very big. Rebuilt many times over the centuries - not only in medieval times, but also during the Napoleonic Wars.
(If I made some mistakes, please let me know)
I took this picture this glorious August afternoon (or was it early evening?, waiting for the ferry. The day was so clear, that we could see France from England :-)Maybe I will show it, too.
Here you can see the first glimpse of the castle, which seems to be crouching half hidden behind the hump. But don't be mistaken - it overlooks Dover and the channel. That's what you'll se when you're approaching it from the place where buses park. Sort of welcome view, with no tourists in sight ;-)
You can see my other Dover castle photo here: http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Kent/Dover/photo753168.htm

lovely warm colours and lighting here. and the composition itself is also very nice. it hints at the enormous size of the castle itself while showing only a small part of it. yet, that small part still looks like a whole thing. i mean that when peole usually take shots that depict small parts of big buildings, ths photographs usually look poorly cropped while your photograph looks whole.

Question number 18 of the faq explains about linking to pictures

Hi Joanna,
I like this composition, the diagonal with the buildings on top is very good. Also the tree at the right frame makes it look like it is there to "prevent" the castle from falling down...
Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Hello Joanna,

Your pov and composition are outstanding!
The diagonals, in thirds are perfect!

Nicely saturated colours and good details.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Joanna,
A superbly chosen POV providing an exemplary composition: diagonal lines, three sections, a tree framing the picture to the right. A plus for fine clouds and the many shades of green and yellow in the foreground.
I noticed that my brother liked it too ;-)
Best wishes,
Gert

Witam!
Dover. A byłem ale w nocy. I tylko pamiętam skaliste wybrzeże. Tam dobił mój prom z Belgii. Potem w drogę do Londynu. A tu proszę w Dover są takie atrakcje!

Hello Joanna, very nice shot with beautifull light and colors. I like your composition with the grass in the foreground and the tree on the right side. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards,
Kostas.

hi Joanna,
Dover castle looks interesting and you took a sharp picture of it with good colour and light but your compositional approach could be more creative,I think. and I really got sceptical about the castle's strength... saxo042 hinted that the tree is put there to prevent it from falling and I can see a noticeable tilt to the left that probably serves the same purpose? :)

Witaj Joasiu!

Hello Joanna,
a great diagonal cut make this shot a different one. The impact is great on the texture and the blue sky.
Nice natural framing of the tree.
Excellent composition.

Foozi
