Photographer's Note
So, the best thing about rain when you are trying to photograph something...the possibility of rainbows. Just back from a day at Dungeness, in Kent , England. It was blowing a gale as this faces onto the channel, and 3 degrees when the rain came through. There is shale beach with abandoned fishing huts and all manner of derelict boats, so a boat graveyard of sorts and very photographically interesting. I am very sure it has made it into TE a million times before. This one reminds me a bit of Noah's Ark......
I used two NDG filters and the sun was setting behind me.
About Dungeness...from Wikipedia
Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It shelters a large area of low-lying land, Romney Marsh. Dungeness is also the name of the power station and a few other nearby buildings near the beach, and of an important ecological site at the same location.

Hi Kathryn
wow!
this one is your best!
the only way to possible improve on this one is to have the 'end point' of the right side of the rainbow hitting the horizon line.
but come on....thats really nit picking - I LOVE this !
lucky lucky you
even without the rainbow its a wonderful photo.
love the warm and cold colors combining to create a splendid blend!

Hiya Kathryn
The low POV enhances the old boat skull surrounded by the rainbow. iIn this situation, the grass is orange and contrasts with the cloudy sky.
Good catch

Hi Kathryn. If it wasn't for the evidence of modernity in the composition, the boat and the rainbow have something Biblical about them- reminds me of Noah's Ark.Wonderful moment, great POV. Well seen. Regards. Klaudio.( Heavens above, I have just read your note!Pays to read before critiquing.)

Hello Kathryn,
What a photographic opportunity!
I must admit, we have had more rainbows this year than I can ever remember! Your low pov gives even more emphasis to the boat, as it bathes in the golden light and is haloed by the rainbow. For once, I don't agree with Craig, I like the silhouetted machine in the f/g as it adds a sense of depth, a deep contrast and just a little mystery.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Ciao Kathryn
splendida composizione, molto gli elementi e ben disposti, le due linee sul terreno guidano l'occhio fino alla barca (sembra l'Arca di Noè), l'arco crea una cupola ideale, con due distinti colori del cielo. Bella la luce calda.
Saluti
Carlo

Hello Kathryn
this shouts to be looked at as a thumbnail as it is so otherwordly.I like your low pov and those metal tracks leading off towards the horizon. I have to say that i find the object on the right a wee bit distracting and also wish the boat was less central. But despite these niggles this is a once in a lifetime shot-a Nah's ark boat with rainbow over-wow!

Hi Kathryn,
You really could not ask for a more perfect rainbow than this. The two tone colours of the sky, and the positioning of the boat are all perfect. I agree, rain does bring some nice chances of rainbows and this shows that perfectly. This is a really enduring capture, nice one!
All the best

You lucky girl. This is a photographers dream. And your execution ..., simply WOW.
The low viewpoint, the amazing colors and the rainbow, all together add up to a very alluring and stunning photo. Simply perfect.

Hello Kathryn,
Wonderfull moment. You use a great point
of view: the rails creates a nice depth
in the picture. Light management and the
composition are, as always, great and
the picture has nice warm colors.

hi kathryn,
wow, what a stunner. the light is amazing, that wonderful light that only lasts for a short while, and usually in my case always seems to appear when i've no camera with me, or when i'm driving on the motorway. you've really made the best of it here to produce this. as you say noah and the ark immediately come to mind here, with the ark resting on top of mount ararat after the floods have subsided, and god's rainbow appearing over the sky. beautiful.
regards,
brian

Hello Kathryn,
Just as you commented on a recent picture of mine, the secret in life is to take your camera with you whatever the weather - sometimes the most wonderful shots are taken when the weather is less than wonderful because the lighting can often be magical - as it is here.
You have framed the derelict abandoned boat perfectly within the arc of the rainbow - and it's a magnificent rainbow at that - a double one too if I'm not mistaken - I think I can see a trace of the second bow in the upper left corner.
Your composition is excellent with the rails on the right leading the eye well into the picture toward the boat itself and the boat is balanced by the dark object (? a winch) in the right foreground. Lovely warm colours, perfect exposure and stunning details and sharpness.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello,
The lightning with the twin rainbow is a great opportunuity for photographers.
For a time, the centered composition was a good choice, giving a pivot to the rainbow with the shrunk boat.
The only thing we could discuss is the machine in right corner. I feel it would have been better without, but as always, it is a matter of personnal taste.
Yves.

So nice of nature to grant your request for a rainbow in the absolutely perfect spot, Kathryn! This is really stunning... the light, the beautiful and careful arrangement, the sky, and of course the rainbow itself. Really awe-inspiring!

Hello Kathryn
This is an unbelievable shot. But I mean that in the best way: from your description, this is the result of the weather, filtration and your photographic skills. Or is there also some PP work as well? Either way this is an excellent image, that makes me want to go back there soon: it's only 80 miles or so along the coast...

Will

Hi Kathryn,
This would have to be an award winning shot how amazing to be able to take an image of the old boat so perfectly with the presence of a beautiful rainbow - it is a very clever shot.
I also like the railway tracks excellent POV.
I was married in Sandgate not too far from Dungeness & I know the area well.
Congratulations on a stunning photo.
Kind regards,
Dawn.

Gidday Kathryn
Speaking of being totally delighted with a photo, you must have been jumping for joy with this one (and jumping would also warm you up). What a killer shot, the contrast of those purple tones and the golden light on the boat are what win it for me. This would be an exquisite photo without the rainbow, but a full arc of a rainbow is the icing on the cake. This is a once in a lifetime shot and you took the chance and took an absolutely beautiful photo. Congratulations and I hope you get more of these Decisive Moments: it makes getting up early and in the cold all worth it.
Hugs

Howdy Rainbowkat,
Kowabunga, I have rarely seen a full 180 degree, horizon to horizon, rainbow, and you have created an excellent vision, including the foreground with antique wood vessel.
Congratulations,
and keepup the fine art works,
Ray
PS: We are familiar with Dungeness Crab at our markets and restaurants, but I suspect they are not from England...?
