Photographer’s Note
Yesterday a friend of mine came to the Isle of Wight for a day or two, this person is a fellow photographer so we decided to go on a star trail mission around the island.
The mission got cut short though after this shot! It was cold, damp, and my lens kept fogging up!
I think it was worth it though :-)
As you can see, this is another shot of Bembridge windmill, just under slightly different conditions than the last one!
I also used a little bit of light painting too with my torch.
I used a 38 minute exposure at f4 with my Sigma 10-20mm lens, set at 10mm

Salut Jamie..
Grandiose..
m8 minutes..?

Hi Jamie,
Excellent shot. Quite nice effect "already" after 38 minutes. I like that reddish cast on the horizon and way you have used your torch to light up the windmill and tree.
Did you have to work a lot with this in PS? I'm not sure how D80 works with longer exposures but I guess you get quite a lot of additional red/blue/white pixels scattered around like we Canon users.
Cheers!

What a great shot.
How you got that red tinge on the lower sky without overexposing it? The polar star is easy to identify but the rest of the constelations are not. Is your torch too bright? I mean, the one you used to 'paint' the windmill and the tree. And, for how long you 'painted' them?
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hi Jamie, another stunning result mf. Iv never tried anything like this so maybe you could give me a few tips :) I know alittle about the night sky as i have a 6" refractor telescope :p but Iv never had the shutter open for more than a couple of minites. The north star is well placed in frame. Amazing work.

I think Sibel nailed it - this is galactical windmill!
fantastic shot, Jamie, it looks like a celestial wheel of fortune :) love the red cast, it certainly adds to the unearthly feeling. and I also quite like the perspective distortion, the windmill seems to be tilting back its head to better what's up there.
excellent work, my compliments.
best,
Kristine

Wonderful Shot Jamie, tried this once before with not much success. This is amazing. I have seen many star trail shots but you have a great subject in the windmill too. Love the red in the sky also.
