A cottage garden in the village of Itchen Stoke in Hampshire. The village lies in the valley of the River Itchen, 5 miles north east of Winchester, and 2 miles south east of Itchen Abbas.

The small village of Itchen Stoke is mentioned as far back as 960 when King Edgar granted the manor to the Bishop of Winchester. The Domesday Book (1085) records that by Edward the Confessor's reign (1042-1066) the land belonged to Romsey Abbey who retained ownership until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. Sir William Paulet, created Marquis of Winchester in 1551 was granted the manor which stayed within his family until the Parliamentarians confiscated much of the property in the hands of Royalist supporters. At the Restoration the fifth Marquess of Winchester re-claimed the manor, his son was created Duke of Bolton in 1689 and the land belonged to successive dukes until the nineteenth century, when it was sold to Alexander Baring who was later created Lord Ashburton.

The title refers to an old English folk song, the first verse of which goes like this:

How many kinds of sweet flowers grow
In an English country garden?
We'll tell you now of some that we know
Those we miss you'll surely pardon
Daffodils, heart's ease and phlox
Meadowsweet and lady smocks
Gentian, lupin and tall hollyhocks
Roses, foxgloves, snowdrops, forget-me-nots
In an English country garden

Hallo Stephen!
What a view! This house nearly drowns in green and your angle emphasizes this impression. I think that here friendly people are living. A very inviting scenery ...
Greetings from springlike Germany!
Frank

Bonjour Stephen,

Wonderful ambiance,flowers,sun,green,old architecture.Excellent
mood and photo.Regards,
Horatiu

And a very typical one too with the olde worlde houses. All that is missing is the thatched roof. The composition is quite unusual and it works very well. The red poppies are in the perfect place to command the attention. Well done

Hello Stephen,
a colourful scene of strong green, warm impression, therefore I had more thought to see this in France or Germany (because of the half-timbered architecture).
A place like an invitation.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hello Stephen
Une très belle lumière qui donne une belle gamme de vert sur ce jardin, une belle harmonie seulement rompue par les taches rouges des fleurs.
Du très bon travail, amicalement

Hi Stephen,
Excellent capture of this traditional English cottage with of course a lovely English garden. The inclusion of the narrow road is a very nice touch to this fine country image.
Regards, Tom

Hi Stephen, agree with Kath and unusual compositoin which works really well. I like the path on the left hand edge.
cheers
Leon
