Saint Mary's Church in the village of Itchen Stoke in Hampshire. The village lies in the valley of the River Itchen, 5 miles north east of Winchester, and 2 miles south east of Itchen Abbas.

Some information about the history of the church extracted from an article by Dr. Isabel Sanderson found on the Southern Life (UK) web site:

The architect of the church, built in 1866, was Henry Conybeare, the brother of the Revd. Charles Ranken Conybeare, then vicar of the parish of Itchen Stoke with Abbotstone. The design of St. Mary's was based on that of La Sainte Chapelle in Paris.

The site is several feet above the level of the road and this adds to the imposing nature of the building. Some years ago, the graveyard was planted with wild daffodils and the irregular spacing of conifers and other trees enhances this site. A steep path leads from the churchyard gate to the west door, above which is a small statue of the Good Shepherd. A large, circular rose window above the doorway was given by Lady Ashburton in memory of her husband. In the evening sunlight the glass in this window can give rise to brilliant reflections.

When seen from the outside, the proportions and design of the east end of the church, though very different from those of neighbouring village churches, are nevertheless pleasing. The roof is of purple and grey-green slates, skilfully laid in a regular diamond-shaped pattern: at the east end of the ridge is an open belfry with two bells, built above the chancel arch. The walls are faced with ragstone and the quoins are of Portland stone.

The large, rose window at the west end of the church was repaired some years ago but the cost of necessary extensive repairs to the fabric at a later date was beyond the means of a small rural parish and regular services in the church were discontinued, the last being held in 1971.

The full text of the article, which is quite detailed, can be seen here .

Hello Stephen

What a charming place !
This church is really pretty with its rose window.
The way you've composed is very well seen and gives the impression that the church is lost on the hill.
Very elegant framing with the trees and the flowers at the foreground.
Beautiful soft colors and fine sharpness to reveal much details of the architecture. Well done.

Regards,
Karine

Hello Stephen! Wonderful church. Amazing architecture. Very good POV. Nice colors. Perfect sharpness. Ideal capture. Good luck!

Bonjour Stephen,
Le chemin méne tout naturellement vers l'église. Les couleurs de la verdure et du ciel bleu se marrient idéalement avec les textures et couleurs des vieilles pierres. Le point de vue est idéal qui donne de l'importance à l'édifice. Bon travail.
Bon dimanche
Cordialement
Joël

Hi Stephen,
A very nice british piece of papagolfade, not much old but looking older, surrounded by good spring atmosphere and shot from a lower pov to help it stand out.
Have a nice sunday JY

Salut Stephen

A fantastic colour contrast, between the green & blue sky with good sharpness, & superb lighting contrasts. I like the curved hook & lead in lines of the fg path. Tfs!

Hi Stephen,
Excellent colours of the church against lovely blue sky, beautiful architecture shot,
Georg

Stephen,
Your composition and POV are excellent here looking up the hill at the church which you show from a nice angle showing depth and direction. The path leading up to the church leads the eye into the shot while the trees frame it nicely. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The blue sky forms a great backdrop for the shot.
TFS,
Asa

A very beautiful church and I really love the pov here with the pathway leading upto the church and the very pretty wild flowers. A very lovely scene. Nice detail. TFS

Hi Stephen,
I like this picture of many reasons. The POV is very good; you have managed to give this church a feeling of importance, you are below it! The tree to the right is well placed to give good balance and finally the colours are very good.
Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Bonsoir, cher Stephen,

bonne semaine

hi Stephen

The good weather has given a good moment for capturing this nicely composed architecture shot, giving nice contrast and sharpness. If the tree does not block the church, perhaps it would give a clear view, IMO. Nice work.

Hi Stephen,
Beautiful old stone country church that is seen in wonderful details. The lovely blue sky makes a beautiful backdrop to highlight the incredible design and with the lush green trees make a lovely color contrast to the lovel stone church.
