Photographer's Note

Spice Island is situated Port side (east in this case) of the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour.. known historically as Spice Island as this is where the original spices from the East were first landed.. Today it is more renown for its history and rinking facilities ( still serve a fresh pint)

I could not help but think how many adventurous sailor had last caste his or her eyes on the Island, before going off to war or perhaps a merchant trip- how many thoughts of farewells to loved ones - or the excitement of seeing " home" again after months at sea - in foreign ports, in foreign waters.. It brought back memories of my Naval times- although Spice Island and Portsmouth Harbour had never been a port I had entered...

Normally I would not have posted an image of a "white Sky".. but I quite like it-- it forms a fine backdrop to these wonderful old drinking holes.. which alone must have seen many a good sailor having his "last " pint before leaving the next day..

The History of Britain continues to fascinate me......
