Photographer's Note
The Isle of Wight is the largest island in England and off the Southern coast. The island is a popular holiday resort. Travel to the island is by ferry from Hampshire which crosses a strait called the Solent. This particular car ferry is the one that crosses from Portsmouth to Fishbourne in 40 minutes. The operators are Wightlink and with their forerunners have provided ferry services for more than 160 years.
This picture was taken as we were about to set off from Portsmouth and looking down from the top deck to the area where the cars drive aboard.

Hello Ann,
You have turned a scene from daily life into a splendid graphical composition. The group of three are nicely juxtapositioned and well placed. The splashes of yellow are plus points.

Ann, Hi
This said, 'Ann', right from first view of the thumbnail..
Well noticed, or maybe well seen, as I am sure I would have noticed, yet not seen it as worthy of a click.
The simple palette of colours, and yet a very colourful picture. If only the dogs foot was off the yellow line ! Your sensitive frame just adds to the whole.
Did you opt to leave it on the skew, part of me would try to rotate a degree or two, to put the man true to the horizontal, and the welds on the deck to follow. Or maybe the slight twist lends a sense of the informal meeting of the two characters.
I assume the dog had a fruitless search !

Martin

Bonjour Ann
On se sent dans un film d'espionnage ou les gens n'ont définitivement pas l'impression d'être suivis. Une plongée presque directe dans leur intimité.

Hi Ann
Original and creative composition. A cool shot taken from a well chosen POV. The people and the dog creates a triangle and the yellow line and the yellow rope completes the scene perfectly. Quite intriguing. Nice colour combinations too. Well observed and excellently executed. TFS. Have a nice day.
Best regards, Erling

Hello Ann,
Just as Martin said, I could tell who had posted this one as soon as I looked at the thumbnail and long before I read the photographer's name.
A lovely picture which clearly has your "signature" graphism and the bold and simple lines of composition that you employ when you post such images.
Apart from the few very small areas of human flesh which we can see, the colour palette is limited to two complementary colours - a variety of tones and shades of blue and brilliant bright yellow. The composition is excellent, a single strong diagonal line of yellow striking across the frame, balanced by the coiled yellow rope. That rope and the heavy iron bollard beside it really hold the composition together and I see that the yellow is again echoed even in the dog's harness. Even the lines of rivets around the decking at top left add to the composition very well as also does the interaction between the two people standing, both blissfully unaware that they are being photographed and quite complacent because their hound hasn't actually sniffed out your stash of semtex.
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Ann - I never see the possibilities in this kind of situation but you must have seen the yellows of rope, deck-markings and dog collar immediately and constructed a shot in a split second. And, this is the type of image I think you really excel at. Decisive and quick and very well managed. (Do you expose manually, I wonder, or do you pre-programme for such eventualities?) By the time I have fiddled about the ferry would have docked on the other side.
I read Martin's queries wrt lining up the rivet line and had a quick look myself. If you have cropped this shot, it would work, you would still have the lovely detail in the TRHC where the rope feeds into the frame and the vertical line of the large 'plate' would line up perfectly on the 3rd. Might be worth a further look. In any event, I like the shot, the composition and execution are excellent. The rope and yellow line both follow a parallel angle and the neat little triangle formed by dog and figures is super. Nice work Ann! Warm regards Rosemary

Hi Ann
kind of monochromatic picture, with lots of dark grey plus the dog and persons in black, enhancing the yellow hues of the rope and line.
Good high POV and nice framing.

Well done, Ann, turning this simple downward view of the deck into a nice graphic composition. The yellows match beautifully and create nice counterweights in the frame, and the people and their dog are turned into geometric elements from above. Nicely seen and very well framed!

Hello Ann,
A simple but excellent observation which has produced a very attractive composition of great graphical beauty. Three mainly black bodies and two yellow diagonals. The bodies have formed a fine triangle, which could also be seen as almost a circle, and the yellow details of the dog's collar match the line and the rope beautifully.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Ann
I was almost run down by this ferry this very afternoon as I was sailing into Wooton Creek! Sorry to have missed this and many other posting recently: I've been away for a few weeks. I see you've been travelling as well, and have some great images from a variety of exotic locations. This image proves to me that you don't need to travel half way round the world to take impressive photographs. It's the eye for a shot that counts. This is superb: graphic, beautifully framed, lovely restricted palette of colours. Really out of the top drawer. Who was it who said all his best photographs were made within 100 yards of his house? Was it W Eugene Smith?

Will

Hello Ann,
how could I miss this? This is exactly kind of picture that I love. Turning ordinary into extraordinary. Unusual POV makes a usual scene very interesting - yellow and and grey scale tones are performing a special play of shapes.
Well seen and done

Hello Ann,
Point of view from above are often worth. Here you efficiently composed the shot taking advantage of the yellow elements, placed along one diagonale line.
A good readbility and a graphic shot at the end.

Your keen eye has turned a daily life scene into a very graphical composition. The dog's leash, the painted line, the rope add a flashytouch and really make that image pop. Congratulations,

A fantastic pov and composition. The yellow line and rope are in stark contrast to the tarnished metal on the deck. Even the dog has a bright yellow collar!!
Excellent creative eye to spot this opportunity.
