The Location

Me and geester were returning from an evening of pretty bland light when lo and behold we were met with this drama as we were passing Hailes Abbey in Gloucestershire. A few Dukes of Hazard moves later and we were in a farmer's field scrambling to find something to put in front of this display. This one fairly well epitomizes the Cotswolds. Honey-colored stone buildings, rolling hills, cows and sheep in in the distance fields - the Cotswolds.

The Image

I decided to go for something simple and placed the small farm in the lower right with a small band of field in the foreground. The color was accentuated not by using the saturation slider in PP but by isolating it optically using my 70-300mm telephoto fully extended and a 3 stop grad. I bracketed exposures and combined one for the foreground and one for the sky. (Exposures were .6 and 1.3 sec)

I hope you like it and don't find it too gratuitous. I simply could not pass this without sharing.

Cheers!

Bob G.

Hello Bob,

This shot sounds as if it had some fun in the making!

All your actions, or reactions, were worthwhile.
This is a splendid shot for all the reasons you describe in your notes.
The f/g is interesting (I like the gradation in tones) and the sky, with its glowing colours and extending rays, is magnificent!

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Bob.
Very well done with your tripod and two-shot combination. The result looks very acceptable, close to what you would see with the human eye, I think. The sky is wondrous and the little group of buildings on the right seem to be slipping into a cosy cotswold evening. Nicely done.
Regards,
Andrew

Fantastic red orange sunset, the inclination of the hill gives dynamism in your composition. well done and congrats to your 1.3 to accentuate your fg. Nice shot.

Hi Bob,
What an incredible light ! That's of course the strong point of your picture. Moreover it is very well composed, with the nice line of the hills.

Hi Bob,
I never tire of looking at sunsets, and this one is spectacular. I've not had the chance to visit the Cotswolds but you've taken me there with this exceptional shot.
Cheers

Post Edit: I should have added, well done for spotting those buildings. They really add to the scene when perhaps they shouldn't:-)

Bob,
What a wonderful shot! The lighting is amazing and helps bring out the wonderful colors of this scene. The placement of the buildings is great with them being off to one side with the beautiful landscape on the other.
