“The Parish Church of St Mary

St Mary's church is one of the finest and most complete buildings in England to survive from before the Norman Conquest. Its architectural history is complex and is still much debated by architectural historians, but a substantial part of the building is now considered to belong to the first half of the 9th century, the period of AEthelric's bequest”.

Hello, Peter.

A very nicely-exposed picture taken in a very difficult situation. You have managed to preserve detail in the darkest shadows and in the lightest parts too. Good colours and sharpness. I love the colours of the reflected light in the leaded windows of the church.

An interesting note too - I looked at your link - have you seen the wall-painting? From what is said, I don't think there would be anything to photograph.

Some of these gravestones must be very old - anything of interest to photograph on them?

Best Wishes,

John.

Of the 2 church yard photos I prefer this one, despite the portrait format! Perhaps because of your handling of the light. Our zig zag gaze through the 3 dark stones leading to the lighted door is very effective.
How is it that given the architectural importance of this church, I have never heard of it?
Phil

hello Peter,
So glad I clicked on the thumnail (which wasn't much to look at) as it relieved this atmospheric scene. I like the deep greens of the ancient headstones, the even more ancient (yew?) and the stout door. There is a nice balance between shadow and light.
I followed your link to more information about the church and read with much interest the old English names from history. Here you go reminding me I am English again!
Bev
