Photographer’s Note
The Tower of St. John Baptist parish church in Cirencester.
Cirencester Parish Church is one of the largest in the country. The profile of the church dominates the market place due to the tremendous tower and the three storey porch, which was built circa 1500. It is one of the Cotswolds great ‘wool’ churches because it was built from the prosperity based on the wool trade. The parish church is widely used in the Cotswolds for things like the choir society and music concerts.

You need to learn your history of this church.
The tower was built from a reward that the people of Cirencester received in the 15th century for their loyalty to the king. Some traitors were traveling through the countryside raising money to overthrow the king, but the people of Cirencester would have nothing of their rebellion; in return, the monarch allowed them to keep the traitors' money -- funds that were used to erect this tower.
