Colchester Zoo

Whatever your opinion of zoos, I can’t help but be impressed with Colchester Zoo and its commitment to conservation each time I visit.

It has over 200 species of animals; many of these are classified as endangered or vulnerable species. 41 species at Colchester are part of EEP or ESB breeding programmes (European Endangered species breeding programmes).

The European Endangered Species Programme co-ordinates breeding of species between European zoos to ensure genetic variability is maintained. A species co-ordinator compiles a studbook for each endangered species listing information on each individual and then manages breeding overseeing any transfers to ensure a balanced breeding programme that will maintain a healthy population.

Pictured is Subu, Colchester Zoo’s male lion.

This photo is realy good.

Compliment for the POV and for the frame.

Hi Mark,

I love lions due to their majestic and proud presence. You have captured this in your photograph and although you were using a 18-200mm lens, you must have been pretty close.

Best regards,
Paul.

Most impressive portrait of the king of the jungle, Mark. Great close up with fine details. I used to paint animals in this kind of approaches and this one would definately be a good inspiration back then. Love it.
Best wishes,
ricardo

Hi Mark,
A portrait of a real king. It could be hanging in a palace or thick walled castle.
Excellent.
Regards, gerrit

Impressing picture. Great details, true colours and close-close-up

Hallo Mark,

Also a animal out of the Zoo, but a very lovely muzzle, nose and the eyes.
Sharpness and clarity are superb, for this macro shot. TFS.

Greetings,
John.

Hi, Mark. an excellent portrait of that lion. I really have the impression I'm very close to it. I suppose this is due to the perfect focus and the excellent sharpness of the image. I also like its steady look which nothing seems to disturb.

This is something very different from you Mark and a very impressive portrait it is too. Presumably you used the long end of your lens but we can see every hair. The glints in his eyes really bring the portrait to life.
Kath

Hi Mark
Your tight crop here really shows of the expressiveness of the lion's face. The fur is so sharp he almost looks cuddly.
Very well taken.
Regards
Nikki

Hi Mark,

I'm not a big fan of zoos, it doesn't seem a bad life for animals in a large run like the big cats but for those in small pens it seems to be a life of boredom, however, this photograph could have been taken in the wild. I like the 'in your face' framing, it shows us great detail, the colours & sharpness are excellent and he certainly seems to have a sparkle in his eyes. A fine capture of a magnificent animal Mark, well done.

Regards

Stephen

Hello Mark,
It is a fine portrait of this proud fellow!
Interesting eyes and the tight framing works well...
Expression is well conveyed, excellent details in the fur coat!

Excellent portrait Mark, good use of your lens. Great compo/cropping.
cheers Leon.

Mark, this is an incredibly sharp and detailed shot of the lion! I have really enjoyed studying it! (Normally, it's not safe to be so close to a lion to count its whiskers!) What a wonderful advert it would have been for 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'! Congratulatiions!
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Stunning portrait of the lion, Mark!
The exposure is well done with fine details. I see that the lens is very good! Congratulations!
Regards,
Athanasios.
