[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The cats, as ever, woke me at an alarmingly early hour this morning. I can usually ignore them but, for once, there was a chink of light coming through the gap in the curtains.

Quick as a very slow flash, I checked the time. "It must be the sun!" I almost cried. The sun, for non-UK residents, is only allowed into British airspace between mid-April and the end of October. Even then, it requires special permission to expose itself for more than half an hour at any one time.

I threw on some pants, my shoes and a jumper and grabbed my camera bag and headed for the trusty Jenk-mobile.

It's worth mentioning at this point that Essex (for the most part) is not the most photogenic place in the world - not even in UK terms. So, I had this moment of almost panic - "where the hell am I going to go to capture this momentous occasion?"

Thankfully, there are a few back roads around Braintree and Witham that have a bit of greenery and this shot was taken between Black Notley and White Notley.

I was buzzed by a somewhat confused tractor-driving farmer as I emerged from the field with my Nikon in hand. Mind you, in similar circumstances, I'd have wondered why this hideous apparition wasn't in bed like any other self-respecting townie!

Tech Stuff:

I over-exposed by one stop and used a 0.6 ND Grad to darken the sky. Apart from a bit of work to get some highlights into the shadow areas and a bit of unsharp mask, that's it. Hope you enjoy.

Hi Paul,
Nice episode you have just to capture this shot ... the things we have to do to get the perfect shot. Well it was worth it... you've come up with a lovely composition ... good use of leading lines pointing towards the sun. Well done! TFS
Cheers,
Renier

Hi Paul,
I can identify totally with your note..as a born and bred UK townie, I understand perfectly the wisdom of your words! I am also very familiar with the county of Essex and there is nothing better, in my opinion, than the English countryside at this time of the morning. You have captured it's sultry mood very well here. Let's hope the sun enjoyed it's visit and has decided to stay a while longer! Best wishes, Vicky

Hi Paul!
What a story! You found a great place to take the photo after all. This field surrounded by trees is just great and the colours of the sunrise are really very good.
Good shot!
Regards, Anabela

Hi Paul
Loved your story, reminiscent of some of my early morning attempts at landscape photography, where shall I go etc.
Also living in Essex I agree it's flatness is 'challenging' to say the least.
I like this pic a lot, it conveys the early morning perfectly.
Well done , the cats knew what you should be doing that morning!!

Hey, Paul.
Your note was so cool, I'd have enjoyed the shot even if it hadn't been as good as it is. The composition is wonderful and I love the tree silhouettes. It has a very "morning" feel to it. I am not too familiar with those kind of shots..LOL You did a great job!! Best wishes,
Shelly

I love your note, as much as I like this early morning shot.Being night person I rarely see mornings and sunrises, great shot and nice mood on the photo!

Certainly worth getting up early for Paul.
It is so good that I can almost imagine being there.
The sun looks beautiful, and the light picks out some details of the hedge, well done.
TFS, regards Jean.
