| found on the edge of the river blackwater estury marsh's in Bradwell-on-sea this is the oldest saxon church in essex and possibly the country, it was built by st cedd in AD 653. king sigbert the king of the east saxons (essex)had asked st cedd to carry out a mission to convert his people to christians, after he had heard that he had done a good job converting the people of mercia (midland's)to christianity at the request of king paeda king of mercia . cedd sailed down the coast from lindisfarne and landed at bradwell where he found the deserted roman fort of othona.CEDD probably built a small wooden church at first but then as there was so much stone from the old roman fort it was replaced with a more permanent building the following year (the one we see in the picture)the church was built on the base of the old roman forts wall hence the name st peters-on-the wall.st cedd was recalled to lindisfarne and made the bishop of the east saxons in 654, he died of plauge in 664, also st peter's may be considered the first cathedral of essex |
