Photographer’s Note

The stretch of shingle beach from which the fishing fleet launches has been known as ‘the Stade’ (the Saxon term for ‘landing place’) for over a thousand years.

In 1896, a new Hastings Harbour was built which stopped shingle moving out along the coast. Over time, the shingle accumulated and steadily grew outwards until it created enough beach space for the fleet.

The steep gradient of the beach means that the fishing boats can slide into the sea at High Tide but they have to be hauled out on their return. This prevents them from being more than ten metres long so they can only carry small amounts of gear over short distances.

Each boat has a Winch Shed which is used to haul the boats out of the sea (before this mechanical miracle, they depended on a capstan and a horse). Tractors are sometimes used to push boats into the sea at Low Tide. Wooden blocks called ‘Troes’ are laid under the moving boat.

The Fishing Fleet is one of the most exhilarating examples of living history in the United Kingdom, keeping alive a thousand years of techniques and traditions. The Sea Fish Authority described the Stade "as near perfect a fishery as could be devised" because of the environmentally sound methods used by the fishermen (which includes changing their net size to allow young cod to escape and keep stocks high).

belle prise de vue mélangeant bateau , maisons , rochers ..... Les couleurs sont superbes et le cadrage vraiment bien vu .

Hi Fred. The boat really makes for a great leading line and almost seems to be pointing the way. I like the saturated greens and blues of the sky. The steep hill and it's textures are a great add. Nice one Fred!

Bonjour Fred,
Quelles superbes couleurs, bleus , verts et bruns très intenses, purs.
Une netteté, mélange de tes qualités de photographe et des conditions météo extra.
Joli endroit maritime.
Excellent cadrage avec cette partie de bateau à l'avant plan et une vue sur le chateau.
Bien vu, une fois de plus.

J'aime beaucoup cette composition et la superposition des sujets qui attirent l'oeil.
Les maisons en bois avec la couleur bleue au centre, la falaise derrière avec son château et sa verdure et pour completer le tout ce bout de bateau!
C'est très bien fait, bravo,

Jolie petite composition, c'est amusant de voir les bateaux jusque sur la place du village, j'aime bien le cote scandinave apporte par les petites maisons de bois ainsi que la perspepctive montante vers le chateau. C'est en Angleterre ca avec ce ciel bleu ??? Je plaisante, nos amis anglais ont bien aussi droit a un peu de soleil de temps en temps ;-)

Dag Fred,
Opnieuw een prachtige foto uit het kalme en prachtige streek in England, de typidche huisjes tegen de bergflank aan gebouwd, het groen in de midden, maar het kasteel boven is zelfs tezien. Opnieuw een goed oog voor details!

Sympa ton cadrage... on a l'impression que l'église est posée sur le bateau à droite et les petites maisons sont vraiment prises en sandwich entre la falaise et la plage. Belle luminosité et belles couleurs.

Hello Fred! Very interesting history of the "Stade"! I very much like the POV, it makes the shot almost 3 dimensional as the eye goes from the beach up the cliff. Very effective! The bell tower looks very Spanish, unusual. Well done! TFP!

Bonjour Fred,
Le 14 octobre 1066, une petite armée féodale, à peine débarquée en Angleterre, bat les troupes du roi en titre.

La victoire à Hastings du duc de Normandie Guillaume le Bâtard sur le roi Harold marque la naissance de l'Angleterre moderne.

J'espère ne pas me tromper d'Hastings, ces souvenirs sont tout frais, j'ai regardé des racines et des ailes hier soir à télévision, je n'ai aucun mérite !
Belle prise de vue étonnante.

Bonne note éducative. On dirait que c'est une photo prise d'un parc historique; en tout cas tout parait bien conservé (vieux maisons etc.). Pas ta meilleure photo, mais ca reste une belle prise.
