Photographer's Note
A wave splashes down on the shingle beach as the sun sets behind the wrecked framework of the West Pier in Brighton, East Sussex, England. Opened in 1866 it started to deteriorate in the mid 1970's and was subsequently damaged by the elements and then by two fires in 2003. All that remains now is this sorry looking framework and basically nothing more than a giant birdcage - being a haven for seagulls and a night time roost for thousands of starlings.

Ciao Brian
Ciao e buona giornata

Hello Brian,
The ruins of the pier look rather forlorn under the subdued light, but they do make an excellent focal point. The backlit sky is most attractive and the lovely warm tones bring a sense of peace to the overall scene. Who knows, some day someone will come along and restore it, we can but live in hope.

Hello Brian,
My first thought was that it resembles a Victorian band stand, standing in the water! It may not be a pretty sight in the day time but it makes a wonderfiully romantic image, silhouetted against the setting sun.
I like how you have managed to give a sense of depth and determine the setting by including the frosty coloured grasses in the f/g.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Brian
Les restes de cette jetée constituent un beau sujet photographique dont la beauté est accentuée par le soleil couchant placé juste au bon endroit. De belles couleurs et un très beau ciel.

Hi Brian
I think i remember this same subject. you've posted it before i believe.
this photo is much trickier than it looks, with all the varying lighting conditions, and contrasts.
looks great, while also being very balanced.
good attention to detail.
enjoy your day

Hi dear Brian
In thumbnail I knew this was going to be a corker, and wasn't disappointed whe I opened it up. Those golden tones, the foam of the broken waves and of course the silhouettes of the old pier make for an exquisite photo. One of my favourites for sure, congratulations and what a pleasure to view it.
Cheers and have a happy day

Hi Brian,
The scene looks extremely beautiful and moody with the back-light and cold tones. Executed perfectly as always. Lovely winter post!
Best,

Perfect setting for a dramatic sunset, Brian - between the frame and the clouds, the brightness of the sun is muted a bit, and creates a great atmosphere throughout the shot. Definitely an example of the right way to break the rules here. The waves crashing in FG are a beautiful touch as well. Thanks!

Hi Brian,
Spectacular structure in the sea. I like the golden moment of the day and the effect over the framework. Well seen.

Spooky look and that cloud above the pier seem sto 'tell' that more turbulent times are coming for this building(if that is possible)
Best regards
