Photographer’s Note
The Royal Citadel was the most important English defence for over 100 years with its 70 foot high walls. It remains one of Europe's finest 17th century fortifications.
It was built in 1665, on the orders of King Charles II, over the earlier Plymouth fort as a defense against a threatened Dutch invasion.
It has been in continuous use ever since.
It has been regularly strengthened over the years, particularly when it was equipped with 113 guns.
King Charles believed the Navy 'vital to the safety, honour and welfare of the realm',he was determined to protect Plymouth's military and commercial harbour.
Keen to safeguard his own interests, Charles II knew his fortress would also serve to intimidate rebellious locals who had staunchly supported Cromwell and the Parliamentarian cause during the Civil War.
With some guns pointed at the town rather than out to sea, locals had every reason to feel intimidated!
By the end of the 17th century the emphasis on defence changed due to developments in armaments from a central defensive unit to new forts and gun batteries in a ring around the Dockyard and the approaches to it.
Within its ramparts is a spacious parade ground, barracks for over 300 men and a collection of historic guns.
Every wall is set at a slightly different angle to enable lookouts to have the best possible view.
Thanks for looking.

Hello, Jean.
Encyclopaedic notes as do indeed befit a school ma'm! But a great picture to accompany them. I love to see and hear stuff about local history - it helps make places come alive.
Others might feel that there is a slight tilt in the horizon which could be corrected by a tad of CCW rotation, but I'm not sure. Otherwise, this is a super picture of a formidable structure and you have provided a lot of interesting information about it.
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Jean,
An amazing place, and well seen from this water perspective. The large format creates high impact as if the viewer is indeed on a boat sailing past. The clarity of detail is impressive and the greenery around the structure adds an extra dimension of hue. I might have cropped a little of the foreground expanse of water, but that is personal preference. The impact of this format might be lost even if the composition were slightly improved. A fine capture, Jean. Cheers.

Hi Jean,
definitely a good one, fine colours,
contrast and sharp. Interesting note, too.
Quite interesting composition, eve though
I myself would either come closer to the
shore, used zoom, or crop off a bit of the
bottom to focus the view on the fortification.

Hi, Jean,
Great POV and composition in this. I love the way the structure makes a vee to divide the sea and sky. It give a excellent depth. The colors are great for this grim looking fortress. Really nice shot and great note! Kind regards,
Shelly
