Good Morning Everyone,,
This is Plymouth Lighthouse, known locally as Smeaton's Tower since it was built by that remarkable engineer John Smeaton.
This 'barber's pole' lighthouse used to stand on Eddyson Rocks, warning shipping, until its rocky island became unsafe and it was removed, stone by stone, to be rebuilt here, on Plymouth Hoe.
The tale of the lighthouses at Plymouth is an interesting story and is worth discovering from this site .
As you can see, the lighthouse is an icon for tourists, standing as it does on Plymouth Hoe, along with a large wheel and memorabilia from Plymouth's past. (Ha! Ha! Not the oldies sitting on the bench!!)
Have a lovely Sunday, Bev :-)

This is excellently captured lighthouse from very well selected viewpoint. The view from lover angle makes the lighthouse majestic and dominant. The light is perfect, the contrast against blue-white sky superb. Well done.

Good morning Beverly,
POV chosen show two monuments in juxtaposition, and well scaled by people sitting on the nrear banch.
Prominently high, to be seen far ou to sea, the tower is an imposing structure, painted red and white - and on the picture it has a marvelous contrast to cloudy sky.
Have a nice Sunday afternoon,

Eye-catching work due to the very classy and elegant composition. Well seen and presented scene even the light conditions were quite difficult to manage. TFS!
Have a nice day!

Your point of view and the framing creates an interesting juxtaposition between the lighthouse and the wheel, which now seems to be a must-have attraction for many British towns. The people sat on the bench add a touch of vitality and offers a good sense of scale. The image is pleasantly lit and has good colours and clarity. I wish you a pleasant Sunday afternoon.

Nice framing on the big lighthouse and great cloudy sky background. Well done!
Have a nice Sunday,

super shot of this old lighthouse. A real sense of its scale and so beautifully detailed. We get a real sense of its setting in this wonderfully constructed image. Excellent!

This is a very bold picture of this lighthouse. You placed it just right in the frame and there are little details that make me linger at this photo such as the open shutters of the windows, the big wheel in the BG and the trio on the bench. All taken against an interesting, partly cloudy, sky.
Kind Regards, Ann

Beautiful capture of this colorful lighthouse.
Nice contrasting and eye catching colors on the lighthouse.
Well chosen POV to accentuate the height. The Ferris wheel in the BG is an interesting inclusion.
I like the relaxed mood of the elderly gentlemen which you have caught well and they are providing the essential sense of scale too.
Just wondering how beautiful it would look in the backdrop of a clear blue sky.
Excellent shot and thanks for sharing.
Have a nice day.

Hello Beverley ,
The low POV provides an excellent effect . The framing is perfect , the cloudy sky is a superb Backdrop , and of course , the light house it self is a great subject .

Il n'y a pas grand chose de plus photogénique qu'un phare, à part une cathédrale probablement. Ici, le point de vue lui donne de l'ampleur et on voit très bien la roue à l'arrière plan.

A lovely composition Bev, taken under excellent light which gives the shot presence and mood. I love the juxtaposition between the lighthouse and the more recent 'big wheel'. They show the changing face of seaside attractions. I remember the lighthouse from a Devon holiday many years ago, my mother discovered she suffered from Vertigo and had to beat a hasty retreat! An excellent piece of work, congratulations. Warm regards Rosemary

I rather like the three men sitting on the seat enjoying the scenery who add their interest to a nicely composed scene.
Alas the big wheel that you have cleverly used is no longer there having been moved to a more lucrative site for the winter.
The over cast conditions worked well for you in helping to show the colour and details of the imposing Tower perfectly.
Kind regards Les.

The red and white lighthouse is a very elegant building and seen like this, towering against the light clouds on a generally sunny day, it looks quite magnificent. The wheel behind it is a fine complement to the composition. The good light and sharpness, as well as the people sitting on the bench, are further qualities of the photo.

Ahaha, another great laugh from your note about the "memorabilia!" :)
No wonder this a popular icon and attraction, it's impossible to miss with such bold color, stripes and size. A brilliant composition, placing the lighthouse to the left and allowing for the quarter of ferris wheel and its rounded shape to be seen in conjunction. Couldn't have asked for a better sky either, to add interest and a bit of dramatic effect. The flags as they are, give a hint of motion, gently swaying in the breeze.
If those gentlemen are still seated there next time you return, then maybe they really are part of the "history." :) Have a great week ahead.

Splendid composition making the wheel look tiny and the lighthouse gigantic. I love the clouds too.

heheheh well seeing as the boys are all doing it (posting phallic photos - JJ, Jason & Noel) why shouldn't you? And this one's a cracker. Lovely the red and white stripes, the sky is magnificent with all those puffy clouds and the ferris wheel in the BG is the icing on the cake. Top shot, have a beautiful day.

What a cool structure, and a cool name too! Amazing still to think a building like this can be taken stone by stone and moved elsewhere. I know mankind has achieved greater things than that, but for some reason dismantling a lighthouse seems more impressive to me than a remote control car on Mars
You got a beautiful composition on this too, and well done for the placement in the frame while avoiding lens distortion, something I often get when shooting tall objects off centre. The big wheel behind is positioned perfectly too, with it being partially on the other side of the hill, it creates a sense of wonder as I feel the urge to go further into the shot and see the wheel in full. And the people on the benches give an excellent sense of scale to the tower too, without them there I would have thought this building was a lot smaller than it is. Very nicely done, a fascinating subject and capture.

whatever brings me feeling of seaside, which I live so far from, is making my mind dream. Wish to be there. Beautiful lighthouse in classic colours, great composition with the "eye" behind it.
olive224 (2719) 2013-12-16 7:43
A difficult light but you managed to capture an interesting shot
jemaflor (99027) 2013-12-16 7:59
Beautiful lighthouse with these two colors, well presented, perfect light, format and sharpness.
saxo042 (37900) 2013-12-16 9:45
This impressive lighthouse must be very visible from far away, with these distinctive red and white colours. A good POV and the wheel adds interest to the composition too.
mkamionka (38329) 2013-12-18 8:26
I like very much photographing lighthouses. This picture well illustrates why: they have unique designs with interesting colors and geometry. They obviously have fantastic seaside locations although sometimes it is not easy to show it from the land. This one is really pretty, I like the tiny doors to the windows, and the wheel ads a nice surprising touch to the composition,
Didi (60588) 2013-12-20 1:12
Nice view on the lighthouse
Good sharp picture Ooh ! I see a wheel, it will be interesting to take a tour inside and take a picture of the lighthouse from the higher position :
Kind regards and Merry Christmas
macjake (69729) 2013-12-21 9:41
now tell me this...how the heck did i miss that large lighthouse in your gallery!
its a keeper isn't it!
what a subject!
So is it possible to go up the lighthouse and look out of those small windows?
and did you go up in that wheel too?
love the clouds, love the red and white barber shop stripes, its a cool looking shot and scene.
ourania (47784) 2014-01-19 10:33
this is a marvellous composition, you balanced and framed this irresistible view very skillfully. There's amazing definition, I love that we can see even the stones under the rich paint - this becomes even more fascinating having read in your note about the lighthouse's reconstruction. The sky and the elements you have included from the surroundings complete the view superbly. The people offer great sense of scale. The dramatic light has created extraordinary atmosphere and colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great week,
