Photographer’s Note
This is another photo taken at night in Plymouth.
It shows a pub called The Trafalgar, well it was, someone has changed its name but we all know it as the Trafalgar.
A short note for those that don't know. In U.K what most other countries call bars we call pubs, this is short for public house, a place where the public can go for a drink.
Plymouth is a Naval port and has a large Royal Dockyard to help support the Royal Navy.
Being a naval city there are lots of references in building and street names to Naval matters.
This refers to the Sea Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805 when the British fleet under Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets during the Napoleonic wars. Napoleon was preparing to invade England and had to defeat the Royal Navy to allow his troop ships the cross to England in safety.
Here endeth the history lesson.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the well illustrated history lesson! The quality of this night shot is perfect. Although the picture represents only a bit of the city, it transmits Plymouth's general spirit very well. Good job!

Hello Mike,
This is a very attractive night shot. The illuminated red doors and sign bring life to the image. I also like the figure at the left walking into the picture.
The diagonals of the kerbs and the lines on the road add strength to the composition.
I know from your intro that you are not keen on much PP, but I would like to try a simple WS for you to straighten up that central door frame, and some of the nearby verticals of the buildings.
I'd be interested to know details of the exposure.
Good note!
Regards,
Peter.

Hi Mike, I like your theme "after dark" ! Incredible, what a small Canon Ixus can achieve (I was also using that camera for a long time, easy and so small and handy !) - your new LX3 will do the same job much more easily, you did the right choice if you want to shoot in the dark (the reason why I bought it too, also for the wide angle).
Great colours and nice atmosphere. It reminds me a bit of Edward Hopper's paintings of the same subject.
... I think that I would have cropped a bit more of the bottom (?).
Best regards,
Catherine
(NB : You are right, standard option is OK for the colours after all !)
