It was getting late when on the way home from Dartmeet we were forced to make a diversion because part of the road had been washed away after all the recent heavy rain.
On the top of a hill just before reaching the main road we came across this lonely thorn tree growing beside the remains of a Bronze Age hut.
There are a good many tales of weird and wonderful happenings on Dartmoor but it wasn`t until I got home and had a look at this shot that I noticed the sheeps skull.

magnificent work in B&W!I must say the way you processed the image in monochrome is a masterpiece for me.
It gives the scene kind of "apocalyptic" look and mood.
Have a nice day

I love the treatment you have given this photo to emphasize on the mysterious and haunting atmosphere you speak about in your note. I just love the black brooding sky which has done a lot to create atmosphere and mood for the photo. I remember a cover picture of the novel "Hound of Baskervilles" looking exactly like this photo, only there was a silhouette of a huge hound added. Excellent photo, thanks for sharing.

Set in black and white, it looks like a scene from an old version of The Hound of the Baskervilles. A haunting image, beautifully presented. Thanks for sharing.

hi les. how i love this shot! it is amazingly elegant yet moody with the leaning bare tree and dark sky. the narrow crop gives a very wide appeal to it, where the bare tree next to the bronze age hut looks like a witness of thousands of years history. the blue/grayish tint of b&w is awesome. one of the best this week.
HimalAnda (10669) 2014-01-20 4:42
I like the atmosphere of this picture with that lonely tree in this wide area.
The B&W is elegant.
Royaldevon (40418) 2014-01-20 6:13
Wow, there is definitely mood in this shot.
The strongly positioned tree looks to be using all its might to hold back the force of the advancing clouds!
The whole shot kindles drama.
I believe the b&w treatment accentuates this drama.
Definitely one to peruse and discuss on a wild night when the shutters are rattling and the trees groaning!
My warm regards,

Hello, a very moody image and very nice choice in black and white. Excellent tonal range and silvery look. Sometimes choices can lead us to unexpected but good events like this photo... from your detour.
Have a great day,

Hello Les - I love this. Converting to B&W has added to the mystery of the Dartmoor scenery and the details are superb. The tree, the bronze age hut and the sheep's skull all conjure up images of Merlin and his associated legends. I like your processing very much too, you have some beautiful soft grain in the sky and the slight tint is perfect. Warm regards Rosemary

atmospheric and slightly spooky capture this, but it works so magnificently in B&W. Wonderful!
chrislo (4097) 2014-01-21 4:01
Very artistic and powerful photo. The sky is fantastic and the bent tree that seems to be struggling against the elements makes a great subject in this situation. The dramatic sky, the well balanced composition and use of black and white, all add up to a powerful image. Beautiful !

wow, what a brilliant sense of composition. Excellent positioning of that nicely textured tree at left. Like the tint in monochrome which is, I think superbly matched with this shot. The dramatic sky at top added a lot to your composition. Superb work. Tfs.

A spectacular shot presented equally well. The tone is perfect to create the eerie atmosphere. The lone leafless tree against dark clouds is nicely placed. You have used the ultra-Wide brilliantly for the desired effect. Great execution.
Thanks for sharing.

Very atmospheric scene with the dense storm clouds, the remote barren landscape, thorn tree, then the ancient Bronze Age ruins and sheep skull.
One can feel the dark spirits here.

What would we do if we didn't have B&W as a creative option on TE(rhetorical Q'n of course). I love the spooky atmosphere surrounding this single tree; an atmosphere that has been enhanced by your monotone treatment. Well presented.
abmdsudi (55722) 2014-01-22 4:17
Great moody shot benefited from small windows of reasonable weather, just how exciting the Moors can be but looks like you were in for a storm! Lovely capture and bags of drama in this - the menacing sky really makes this shot as I feel the moodiness with the tree really adds that special touch. The image gives the impression of loneliness but it all leads towards the light on the horizon for good omen! Splendid shot aptly converted to mono, Congrats.

A dramatic view this perfectly photographed and presented in b&w. A truly artistic work. Very well done. Like it a lot!

I like the fight of this lonely tree against the tempests. B&W masterpeice, for sure.
willperrett (11298) 2014-02-10 9:51
Drama in bucketloads here. Your choice of b/w is very effective and entirely appropriate. In my opinion, it has allowed you to go overboard with the sky and get away with it: this degree of tweaking on a colour image would probably just look tacky, whereas here, we have a valid effect. Extremely good work.

here is another one of your black and white photos, although there is a large blue tinge to the scene.
i take it the sheep's skull is there on the bottom right portion?
for obvious reasons the twisted looking tree is the main attraction here, along with the wicked looking sky. really think the wide open view with that lens did its thing too!
cool looking scene

this is such a beauty in b n w.like the presentation and the framing.
ourania (47910) 2014-03-13 10:56
this is a captivating photo, you managed to render the vast and still landscape so dynamic, vibrant and suggestive. I like very much how the diagonals of the landscape meet and contrast those of the tree. There's dynamism on the ground and in the sky too and a rich range of grey tones makes the scene very rewarding. I love the vastness and the timelessness, the endurance of the delicate thorn tree and its connection with the amazing bonus you found in your frame, the sheep skull. A powerful image, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
