Another photograph taken during a wonderful and friendly TE meeting in June, 2011 in Cumbria, this time of the Tarn (or lake) at the tiny village of Watendlath which sits high between the Borrowdale and Thirlmere valleys at 863 feet (263 metres) above sea level.
Watendlath Tarn is 7 acres (28,000 square metres) in area with a maximum depth of 56 feet (17 metres). It was given to the National Trust by Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Louise, in memory of her brother, King Edward VII. The tarn is stocked with brown trout and rainbow trout and is a popular fly fishing water, with wading and boat fishing used. This was one of two small boats which were moored at the east end of the lake, just a stone's throw from the village and only a hundred yards or so from the packhorse bridge.
You can see a larger version of this picture here on "beta" TE.

Hello John ,
A splendid composition . The fine boat in the Fg is perfectly placed . the green hills and the beautiful sky provide a superb BG . The mirror is not perfect , but I like a like a lot the effect of the little riddles ;

What a crisp and beautiful image ! The boat in the foreground is nicely positioned on the diagonal and fills the empty space of the lake very well. It has a strong visual impact and is the perfect detail to introduce the viewer to the scene. A beautiful shot, full of luminosity and atmosphere, enhanced by the lovely shades of green of the backdrop vegetation. Very nicely done.

Très beau paysage avec cette embarcation en avant-plan. Les couleurs sont magnifiques. Bien fait.

Good composition well balanced with this boat in this beautiful landscape, I like the nice light and the brightness on the water, tfs.

Très jolie composition . C'est un plaisir de contempler ce paysage paisible et cette barque est une véritable invitation à glisser sur ces eaux tranquilles.

You've been sitting on this one for a while! I particularly like the tones in the water, and the distressed paintwork of the boat. Glorious location.

One word is actually enough, but why use one word when twenty will do ! So a second observation, your first outing with your new toy two posts ago was also very pleasing. I like the effects it gives, and the prominence it provides to the middle ground. Rather in the manner of the bokeh effect from a wide aperture. When I can give myself more time with my camera than currently one would be on my shopping list. Assuming Time and Finances coincide in any meaningful manner !
Hope all is well up north and the spring weather is suiting you.

a classic composition this, all the elements perfectly placed and balanced. It is a shot that typifies the beauty and tranquillity of this glorious English county. Lights, details and clarity all flawlessly managed. Stunning!

The boat could not have been better placed as an introduction to the shimmering waters and the beautiful, surrounding scenery. (You know how I feel about The Lakes!)
Lovely details pick up the paint-peeling textures of the boat and the wonderful light reflections across the water.
I like this very much!
Have a great day,
I am critiquing this in Beta. I seem to have picked up some sort of virus which keeps removing the photographs in the regular TE. I can see the photograph but when I try to critique it, it disappears! Also, certain words within the notes have become underlined and live! We have tried to find it, used the Antivirus checker, been on the Internet but all to no avail ... yet!!

An attractive scene John and an attractively managed photograph. I like the play of light across the landscape and the light makes me think that there may be a shower around the corner.
Amazing how you seem to have captured much more than an image here, there is a real feel for the weather conditions too.

Boats alone on a lake always brings a feeling of calm and peace. This is indeed a very attractive picture and the boat is perfectly placed here as a diagonal line in the composition. A very beautiful landscape here!
holmertz (40069) 2014-04-02 8:40
This is a very pleasant view of the well placed boat on the very dark lake. There is a fine balance between the lush green hills and the almost black water. The reflections of sky and clouds have given the surface some beautifully varied tones.
Kielia (23351) 2014-04-02 9:40
a wonderful image that highlights the weather conditions and superb light. Moody and very well composed, a fine image that captures the moment. You probably know that I cannot resist boats and that is why I really like it. Thanks for sharing!

Une image bien composée, j'aime bien la position de la barque dans la diagonale, la lumière sur l'eau et le paysage verdoyant.

You seem often blessed by the most beautiful light, this is just incredible! THe whole composition is perfectly thought out and makes a picture anybody would be happy to hang in their home. The boat is a great subject of course, especially of its unexpected colors, while off in the distance, the clarity of the landscape is so fine I think I can count the leaves!
Another beauty, thanks as always for sharing.
All the best

its easy to see why people have been enjoying this photo my friend.
As do I. this is the type of scene that we'd see in a Calendar...say June? :)
look at that water! love the rippling effect, looks as if there's a small tremor at the bottom of the lake and its making it's way upwards to the surface :)
love the slight saturated green grass to give a pop of color in the bg, and also the light on the hills with the large clouds...what more could you want.
but whats best is your choice of compo, its quiet, serene, elegant and fits the frame so smartly.
again...beauty of a shot John
photoray (11785) 2014-04-03 15:17
Fine view of Watendlath Tarn, the classical wood fishing boat at rest, the cloud reflections and the green forested hilly landscape backdrop.
Thanks for sharing,

One for the The Lakes calender this super image of this gorgeous Tarn.
Your Pov, is spot on with the left Fg, of the boat inviting the viewer to hop in and explore this fantastic lake. The moody sky, colours and Bg, mountains are splendid.
Well managed and presented.
npecanhuk (64240) 2014-04-03 23:33
Very pleasant-looking details!
Very beautiful, attractive and peaceful-looking picture!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, chosen pov and composition are all excellent photo qualities here!
TFS - congrats,

Another great image from the Lakes. I remember you taking shots from this position. Your processing has picked out the lovely colours in the boat. The green hills and partly cloudy sky are gorgeous. The light was just right and you used it most effectively.
Kind Regards, Ann

you have composed this very well with the positioning of the boat, naturally drawing the viewer's eye further into the scene. the sunlight is lovely and helps produce some wonderful colours. i love the mix of blue sky and dramatic clouds adding further interest to the scene.
ACL1978 (7467) 2014-04-06 7:00
Lovely composition and color, John - the boat's a nice lead in and I love the look of the landscape beyond, with all of its brilliant green. This shot makes me hopeful for summer!
Looks like someone attacked that boat during a paintball game - little flecks of color all over it really make it stand out nicely, especially in the larger version. Thanks!
ourania (30147) 2014-04-13 7:46
a natural landscape with striking graphical impact, a fine composition, very rewarding in its minimalism. I like very much the dynamism of the perspective and the captivating sense of depth, the bold definition of colours and how each element and area brings into the frame its special texture and character. The whole is very consistent and harmonious. The play of light and the reflections are mesmerizing. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
speedymanu (3583) 2014-06-11 7:58
a compostion with a great feeling of depth (despite the shallow waters). It has a strong sense of serenity thanks to its vivid yet not oversaturated palette and the subtle riples on the surface.
Have a nice day,
