I was browsing through my pictures trying to find something to remind me of spring and summer sunshine and came across this one of the 18th Century narrow packhorse bridge which spans the stream from Blea Tarn Gill as it enters the northern end of Watendlath Tarn in Cumbria.
The little hamlet of Watendlath is owned by the National Trust and sits high between the Borrowdale and Thirlmere valleys at 863 feet (263 m) above sea level. The traditional Lakeland farm in Watendlath is rented out by the National Trust and, as is the case with Lakeland farms owned by the Trust, the herd of Herdwick sheep is owned by the Trust and not the farmer, changing hands with each tenant. This is part of the National Trust's policy aimed at ensuring this rare breed's survival.
This picture was taken during a wonderful meeting of TE friends in Cumbria in June, 2011.

these old bridges are masterpieces of construction. They look so graceful and beautiful especially in this idyllic setting. A gloriously summery atmosphere with a sense of the long warm days permeating this beauty of a shot. Love it!
Enjoy the weekend - B.

Thats a charming composition with excellent framing and dof. I think one can spend hours at this location simply gazing at the beautiful bridge and its lovely natural surroundings. The bright colours of the vegetation give a very uplifting quality to the picture and the presence of the couple brings it to life.
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

Hello John ,

Idyllic Watendlath scene, foreground of wildflowers, picturesque rock foot bridge, then the steep green mountainside backdrop.
Looks like a fine place to saunter.
Thanks for sharing,

Hi John, I need not to look at my photos for spring and sunshine. Enough to turn head from computer and look through the window. My forsythia is now all yellow and hepatica looks so charming.
I remember this stone bridge very well. Those were splendid days in Cumbria! This fabulous photo brings such nice memories.
I have heard that you meet together this year too. when I was in Llandudno I thought it could be very nice place for a meeting. There are a lot of places nearby to see and hike - nice walks along the sea, castles, mountains, and funny Welsh language around. But a bit far from Scotland.
Have a beautiful Sunday

L'endroit est charmant et tu en as réalisé une très bonne image. Je suppose que ce sont des membres de TE que l'on voit sur la photo?

Beautiful summer day and flowering river bank gives just great feeling. That ancient looking bridge is wonderful with the plants growing. The couple walking adds welcome human presence.

Looking for a pic to remind you of spring and summer, you could not have found a better one than this! Your post makes me pine for warmer greener days. This could easily be a a scene from Ireland as I look at the buttercups scattered in the field and the beautiful old stone bridge. I have driven through Wales once and it is a stunningly beautiful country. Looking at your image here, I would be tempted to perhaps try and spend some time there this year for my summer vacation.
Thanks as always.

This is a very very pretty view, as idyllic as anything could be and with fantastic colours and clarity. Certainly the fine old bridge is the main subject but the steep hillside and the yellow flowers in the foreground also catch my attention. And once again a glimpse of people increases my understanding of the view and feeling of almost being there. Are these people TE members or just innocent bystanders?

Ciao e buona serata

This is the kind of composition our friend Peter G would have loved to make WS for, lines lines and arrows. The two parallel diagonals are connected with horizontal line along the bridge, forming an "S". The people are also a very good inclusion, with some red as well. This is a very beautiful view and a very well composed picture.

Good Morning John,
Ah, this is like my second home!
I do rue the fact that I was unable to join you all on this TE meeting.
A very well composed shot, with the stream making a most natural lead to the focal packhorse bridge, which not only spans the stream but also the third's line.
Your shot manages to include the steepness of the slopes, giving a real majesty to those rocky outcrops and setting a strong contrast with the gentle nature of the f/g.
The figures are a good inclusion adding colour and a realisation that people walk around, enjoying this scene.
Have a lovely day,
