Sometimes, the miracles of Nature just make us stop and stare.
This was Derwentwater, early on a cold, December day. Previously, we had travelled across it on a ferry and watched the water birds feeding on its banks.
Here, today, the water had turned to ice. Its surface was covered by a thin layer of snow, resembling a glistening carpet.
The mist was lingering, despite the sun, giving the sort of atmosphere that is always included in a ghost story!
Difficult to explain but utterly beautiful.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing this shot, Bev :-)

I'm sure alot of people on TE will enjoy viewing this one! just like i do.
its great that you chose a piece of the scene where the tall grass is, that way it breaks up the whiteness a bit more. very attractive!
its so calm and so serene.

Hello Beverley ,
Not the best weather to sail on the water ! The picture is beautifully composed , with a splendid light and a fine effect of the litle mist .

Meanwhile I'm tired of winter but when I look at this picture of December 2010, I realize that this year fortunately winter wasn't that severe ...
But I do like to look at this picture. Despite the fog the light was strong enough to guarantee a clear view. The composition in horizontal layers is excellent and thanks to the vegetated triangle (or the spit of land) on the FG a good DOF is given.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao e buona serata

Oh wow, you are so right. This is indeed a miracle, one that I have never witnessed myself and one which is so beautiful it blows me away. I love the light shining on the granulated surface of the ice, the boats in sillhouette and the wonderful hazy mountains are added bonuses. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful phenomena and for producing such a photo of great quality and beauty.

Believe me, Beverly, never saw such phenomena. Amazing how the water surface get ice-frozen and boats seem as parking on...
The cold mist created an extra blured vapor over the lake, and with the sun-light, this looks as fog, but it is not fog at all.
Well collected shot, cold yet beautiful.

a magical scene this and one that I would have loved to have witnessed first hand. Winter seems to be dragging on this year, but it is worth it if you get wonderful shots like this. Perfectly executed, composed and presented.
Regards - Brian.

Effectivement, il faut pouvoir arrêter et admirer , même si les propriétaires de bateaux doivent avoir certaines craintes de voir les coques fragiles exploser sous la force de la glace.J'aime beaucoup la lumière en diagonale.

Beautiful scene and strong composition here with the grass and mountians providing the contrast that breaks up the scene. It has a surreal quality about it that makes the ice look more like sand and the boats are abandoned on a dry riverbed - unlikely in the lake district though - always raining!

It looks very cold here, but still very beautiful. The ice must have surprised the boat owners here. A very beautiful view with a pleasant depth.

A gentle sun, the fog, ice and some snow .... All these elements have joined you can show us a scene of great pride and beauty, these dried plants in the foreground give a beautiful backlight, ideal this colorful dim.
Magnificent .... brightness and sharpness.
Have a nice day.

Beautiful winter weather. I guess that's not very typical for England. Sunshine, ice and fresh snow look lovely, and this is well framed too. Those boats are clearly not moving anywhere soon.

I like your poetic description, "...a thin layer of snow, resembling a glistening carpet." Of course, on December 20 it would have been a short day. Any idea what time of day this image was shot? It does look very cold.

A great winter scene from Cumbria. I like the glistening fg snow. Good sharpness and well composed with natural looking colour & excellent graphism and lighting contrasts. I like the distant yachts. This looks similar to Erzurum today!

Beautiful, as you say. I'm just glad my boat isn't stuck out there! The foreground reed-bed is so important to the composition!

This is a really amazing landscape, with the frozen lake and the boats. The light and the mist realy give it a special atmosphere. I like the plants in foreground - they really add to the composition.
