Porthleven is the most southerly port on the island of Great Britain. It was originally developed as a harbour of refuge, when this part of the Cornish coastline was recognised as a black spot for wrecks in days of sail.
The construction of the harbour was a great engineering achievement. The shingle bar with its stone bridge at the mouth of the south west facing valley had to be removed so ships could enter. Napoleonic War prisoners were used but the construction took 14 years and was not completed until 1825.
The granite pier and quays were constucted by 1825 but it was still an open harbour. The harbour was purchased in 1855 by Harvey and Co of Hayle in Cornwall, who built the inner harbour which was completed in 1858. The huge timbers (baulk) that seal the inner harbour in storms are still in use today.

A cleverly framed composition where the foreground boat is nicely balanced out by the seagull. There are lots of interesting elements to see in the harbour and the town beyond. Lovely light and colours and excellent clarity. A lovely advertisement for the Cornish tourist industry:-)

I love St Ives and this shot captures the beauty and very essence of its idyllic appeal. Really must get down to Cornwall again soon. Looks amazingly quite for June too!

You have done a nice job of setting up this shot! The inclusion of the beached boat in the foreground grabs the eye and balances the seagull flying overhead. The seawalls and lines of boats create fine diagonals through the scene.

Spectacular capture of that small port. I like the colors and the lazy atmosphere. Good quality, well taken.
