Photographer's Note

This is Marhamchurch - "Marwenne's Church": the church of the village.

The patron saint appears in the story of the village at the end of the fifth century. St. Marwenne is thought to have established her hermitage on the site where the War Memorial now stands, thus initiating the first ecclesiastical settlement in the village to which she gave her name. For more that fourteen and a half centuries a succession of churches has stood on the hill top ; and the present church, itself is five centuries old.
