Photographer’s Note

A view of the newer of the two bridges across the Severn Estuary in Bristol. In my opinion this is the nicer of the two bridges, I like the way it sweeps across the estuary (something I tried to capture with this composition) and peaks with the two towers marking the centre span.

This is the first time I've been close up to it on the land, having been under it a couple of times in a motor boat heading from Sharpness to Avonmouth and then onto Swansea.

I headed here before sunset as storms were forecast for late in the evening, so I was hoping for a nice moody sky at sunset but only got dull grey clouds! I decided to wait a bit for the sun to go down fully and take this blue hour shot with the lights from the bridge casting down into the water.

You show us a really fascinating sight here. The light, the colours and the point of view create a nearly solemn atmosphere here. A truly fabulous ans somehow elegant building. I'm sorry - but my opinion a perfect photo ;-) Great!

Hi Simon,

I especially like the way the lights spill onto the water. Really nice luminosity fading into the blue base color of the photo. Excellent composition and tremendous depth of field - it is evident that you put some thought into this capture. The only thing that detracts IMO is the boldness of the font in the frame. Otherwise, to me, a shot worthy of hanging on a wall.

Hello Simon,
Although you didn't get the cloud filled sky as you wanted, this "blue hour" shot works well for me. The colours have a soft feel to them and the mood created is tranquil. I too like your POV showing the sweeping curve of the bridge. Well captured overall.

Another good one here. I like that the sky has a bit of blue to it even though it was a bit cloudy. You're a natural mate!
