Photographer’s Note

Song/Album: Patti Smith, just about my favourite all time album track.

After months of looking, I've finally found a film scanner that's both cheap enough and good enough, a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV, which is about the only thing availble at around £200. I've started archiving my old slides, and I hope about 1 in 100 will be worth posting.

The most interesting thing about this shot is that it's not taken in a living museum, as the condition of the cart indicates. These are working farm animals, stopped for a rest after bringing in a load of hay. Crossing Europe's new divide the 'Golden Curtain' as some call it, between Hungary and Ukraine for the first time in 1997 was quite a surprise, and in this part of Transcarpthia rural communities were living much as they would have been 100 years ago, and looked very healthy for it, more to come.

good idea to remember this style life which is not so far away in some european countruy.
Just a little note about frame who could be less hight to center on the subject. But it is good too also like that. Just enough clearness.

Hi Richard, this indeed looks like a scene taken some hundred years ago. and thus your choice to convert it to sepia is an excellent choice. Well taken, and congratulations with your scanner, and good luck with all the work you'll have to do, scanning.

A very nice scene Richard, the choice of sepia tones is perfect to emphasize the old style of this shot.

It's come from 100 years ago,a timless shot which you skilful in this motief,with this sepia/B&W pic,You did great Richard.
Very well seen & really well captured,a real pose of horses are interesting,and great composition you managed here.

Composição bastante interessante, o duotone foi bem aplicado, precisava de mais definição (sharp), e talvez cropar um pouco na parte superior !

Although they're not moving, there's a strange feeling of action and power coming out of this photograph. That is, partially, related to the angle of POV.

that is pretty interresting, this not being a museeum set up. You caught it very well and though the grains may not be intentional I think they are great for the feeling of nostalgia. The shadows on the horses backs look great and give us a sunny feeling. Thanks for sharing some older material.

I really like the point of view here, and the tones. It seems just a bit blurry. Perhaps a scanned photo? Nice work anyway!
