Photographer’s Note

These towers are part of the complex of ruins atop one of the limestone plateaus at Inkerman. Ruins like these dot the southern Crimean landscape, as the place has historically been very popular with all sorts of cultures.

At this place, which is one of my favorites in Crimea, one can stand amid these medieval ruins and look across the Chyernaya (Black - sorry for the clumsy transliteration of the Russian) River at the ground over which the soldiers of the Crimean War fought the Battle of Inkerman. Later, the Soviets fiercely defended the opposite cliffs from the German onslaught during the Second World War. Oh, and below you, built into the cliffs themselves, is an old (and still active) monastery.

This is a magical place in a land where magical places are the norm. Crimea and the Ukrainians made a very deep impression on me!
