GLOBALIZATION

Professor: What is the truest definition of Globalization?

Student: Princess Diana's death.

Professor: Princess Diana's Death? How come?

Student: An English princess with an Egyptian boyfriend crashes in a French tunnel, driving a German car with a Dutch engine, driven by a Belgian who was drunk on Scottish whiskey, followed closely by Italian Paparazzi, on Japanese motorcycles, treated by an American doctor, using Brazilian medicines! The story, originally written by an Armenian-American in California, using Bill Gates' software, is paraphrased here by a Turkish-American professor in Virginia. And you may just be reading this account on an IBM clone, that uses chips made in Taiwan, and a monitor made in Korea, on a machine assembled by Bangladeshi workers in a Singapore plant, transported by lorries driven by Indians, hijacked by Indonesians, unloaded by Sicilian longshoremen, trucked by Mexican illegal, and finally sold to you. The story also appears in a newspaper in the Ukraine, at a corner of a park, where a banner hails the opening of an American-produced film that recounts the resurrection of ancient Egyptian mummies. Next to it hangs a banner in Cyrillic and Latin characters, describing an Italian product! Oh yes, there is one more. The American economy catches the flu, which unhappily spreads rapidly through Afghanistan, Akrotiri, Albania, Algeria, American Samoa, Andorra, Angola…That, professor, is Globalization!

Professor: This is just a demonstration of the inexorable increase in disorder, in short, of the Second Law of Thermodynamics! Or perhaps it is all of us on Trekearth. But please, don't get me wrong, I am not against globalization. I am against its misuse.

Merhaba, Bulent -

A bit cluttered, but it seems that is the point. Very strange to see a Russian poster for "Mummy" (the more so since I'm studying Russian these days!). I'm not sure what the statue is all about; it half looks like a monument to decadent bourgeois self-indulgence. :-)

Funny one... I find the italian poster advertising "the battle of styles" very fitting here, also interesting to see that everything seems to be written in Russian except the "Obmin Valyuti" that is in Ukrainian. I liked Odessa, I guess it has changed quite much since my visit some 15 years ago...

Hello Bulent,
The arresting pose of the statue caught my eye first. Then I noticed the same pose in the banner to the right. Photographically, I like the picture very much especially the strong diagonals created by the steps contrasting with the dark railings. The large colorful rectangular banners give artistic balance. Clarity and details of the photo are superb. Numerous other elements of contrast including lines, shapes, shadows, and languages are visible. Your humorous note complements the photo perfectly. You have given us a brilliant TE package!

Hi Bulent, Very interesting note about the globalization, indeed , now it is difficult to find something that is from one country, or rather often it is from China. Indian doll in south-west - Chinese, T-shirt with guanaco in patagonia - Chinese, and so on. I like this photo with the stairs. Interesting this statue - as one of the visitors. And the posters are still in Russian. Funny, I would not think about it as the illustration of the Second Law of Thermodynamics :))).

I am a witness at this time in Moscow and Kiev.
Confirmation is your shot. Below we see the kiosk of the exchange (Обмiн Валюти in ukrainian)
Up we can see the advertising in Italian - the battle of stil say really - TRUE),The Mummy Film poster (in Russian) and in the end, the statue that I do not understand what it should mean. ..
All this is very sad for me at least ...

Hello Bülent,

I smiled while reading the joke and laughed with the last paragraph. It's not so straightforward connecting this fine, well observed photo with the text, but the next moment it makes every sense. Likewise, the photo isn't so catchy at first and I guess if it was possible that we didn't look at it with some attention, we could label it as "just an interesting snapshot that is a good illustration of the note". However, not surprisingly, it is much more than that. It's remarkable how you managed to find a subtle harmony in that busy room, using the profusion of lines, namely of the stairs and its railings, the matching poses of the statue and the guy on the film poster, the unexpected balance of the red rectangles with the posters, and so on.

PS: I found another interesting spiral here in TE.

Me too, in turn, will have to push it over the 100 round number, as it is a challenging theme. To be frank, having been travelling since I was 17, has greatly helped me adopt to different mentalities and cultures. The particular issue of TE and similar sites has greatly helped in promoting greater understanding among the peoples of the world in a more balanced way, as we start with some common standards as prerequisites; a good camera, some good taste and a sense of good competition and contribution at the same time. Economics, however, appears to be very different where the majority of people are rather suffering since they have given up traditional ways of self sustainance and rely on international agreements for their well being. The present crisis is a "God bless us all" situation especially for the weaker economies including Greece's of course.

Have a good week and TFS, as both the theme and the composition are certainly worthwhile

Excellent impression from this city, a very interesting composition of the statue, the stairs and the two banners. Very well seen and captured!
