This is an old photo of Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv. Not good but it is the only one I could find. But seeing the events from this place recently in TV, maybe you would like to see how it can look like in quiet times. Behind the big building one can see the white and golden towers of the main monument - Holy Sophia Cathedral, in Ukrainian Sobor Sviatoyi Sofiyi. The cathedral's name comes from the 6th-century Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople (meaning Holy Wisdom, and dedicated to the Holy Wisdom rather than a specific saint named Sophia).
In 2003 I bought my first digital camera - Casio. And only once I was a paid tour guide in Kyiv.
Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) is the central square of Kiev, called simply Maidan.
In the 19th century, the square contained buildings of the city council and noble assembly.
Since the start of Ukraine's independence movement in 1990, the square has been the traditional place for political rallies, including for large-scale radical protest campaigns: the 1989 student "Revolution on Granite", the 2001 "Ukraine without Kuchma", the 2004 Orange Revolution, and the ongoing Euromaidan.
By early Friday morning, the lone positive point was that -- for the time being -- Ukraine's cycle of political and physical infighting was not then at its bloodiest point, as it had been hours earlier.
Opposition medics said that 100 protesters died Thursday in clashes with police, when gunfire was unleashed.
The government places the toll much lower.
The health ministry puts the total death toll since Tuesday at 77. Twenty-six of them had been previously reported for Tuesday alone.
Another 577 people have been injured; 369 of those were hospitalized, the ministry said.
The Foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and with the opposition overnight.
After dawn, Poland's top diplomat, Radoslaw Sikorski tweeted: "After negotiations through the night, talks ended at 7:20."
Prodded by the foreign diplomats, the key players were talking about not just a bandage for the violence but also a more long-term political solution and maybe the beginnings of healing.
Yet the facts of the last three months and, particularly, the last week show that it's way too early to celebrate or savor any peace. There have been two truces since Sunday. Each of them collapsed suddenly into carnage centered in Kiev's Maidan, or Independence Square. (http://edition.cnn.com/2014/02/20/world/europe/ukraine-protests/)

Sure, you've posted better pictures, but this one comes in just right. I've seen so much (great, but terrible) pictures of the events in the square, I was wondering what it actually looked like normally. The McDonalds is an eyesore, but I guess there's just no escaping. A square is a square, and that's what it should be. Not a battlefield anymore, I hope.
Here's to reconciliation!
And have a great weekend.

I wonder what your viewpoint was ...
With the fountains, the greenery and the pedestrians and without any cars this square looks a pleasant place to stroll around in a big city.
You found an excellent high POV so we can look over that gate (triumphal arch?) and the glass construction and discover the tree lined avenue that leads to the cathedral. The golden and green domes rise beautifully above the high buildings.
I find this a pretty and colourful cityscape and hope for a better future for all Ukrainians.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao e buon fine settimana

A few weeks ago I posted a picture from my hotel balcony a block away from the Maidan to the right from here. You found a nicer angle to include the golden domed church. It's very exciting to follow the news from Kyiv. Today the parliament seems to have deposed Yanukovych and ordered Tymoshenko to be set free. Who knows how this will end? I fear that it is far from over. Will Putin give up so easily?

Historia zatoczyła koło, ale Majdan widzimy w innych okolicznościach, piękne czyściutkie zdjęcie, reportażowo swietnie dobrane

Fine tribute via architectural image of Kyiv. I am impressed by the main buildings multi-storied columns stacked a top each other.

This looks nothing like what I've seen on the news recently. Such a sad and discouraging state of affairs right now, a complete contradiction to this bright and upbeat photo. This is a very pleasing view over the square and surrounding city, many beautiful things to admire and appreciate from this point of view. Hopefully the situation will resolve quickly with no further bloodshed, and the country can be restored to better times. Thanks for providing a positive and colorful image to think of during these moments. Have a great day. Take care.

Real sad what's happening those days over there!
My grandfather was ukrainian and left there because of terrible problems in the past!
I've been reading horrible things about past events over there too!
That place looks beautiful in this picture you took!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, horizontal format, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,

Pozdrawiam i zycze milej niedzieli

You're capturing well this town view by a good composition and bright tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see white church with golden roof with elegant shape. The whole is harmonized well by beautiful color and light balance. And, the sky with nice clouds draws out an additional good atmosphere, too.
Very well done.

A very pleasant street scene in warm and pleasant weather. A strong contrast to the scenes we have seen on TV lately.

These lovely city has the last months a lot experienced, a pity for the more than hundred victims, I hope that the government something has learned, but it's very difficult people something to learn!

Nice to see this shot of the square in more peaceful times. Certainly recent events in Kiev have been terrible, and hopefully the country is able to move past this violence quickly and into more prosperous times. Nice to be reminded here of the lovely architecture and setting, rather than the anger and vitriol that has brought Ukraine to where it is now. Thanks!

kolejne zdjecie "na czasie". Z ogromna ciekawoscia oglada sie teraz te miejsca.

A fantastic panorama of the square that has become notorious with the latest developments, is an image where one can recreate the vision of many buildings and the towers of the cathedral, the green of the trees is a nice color complement.
A beautiful job very well done.
With good lighting and sharpness.
Have a nice day.

Hello MAlgorzata ,
A striking contrast between this pretty and colorful picture of Maidan and the dramatic views of riots we have seen recently .
RhodieIke (11742) 2014-02-25 23:27
Great to see the place in peaceful times, the modern chains do make not make pleasant viewing in between these beautiful architecture buildings. But alas they would not be their if we did not use them.
Thanks for giving us this super view, lets hope we have peaceful times ahead here.
Warm regards, Iain.
