Two men taking a break from their maintenance work in the opera house in Kiev. The big man behind them is Taras Shevchenko, Ukrainian 19th century writer who has lent his name to the Kiev opera.
I quote Wikipedia:
Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko (Ukrainian: Тара́с Григо́рович Шевче́нко, (March 9 [O.S. February 25] 1814 – March 10 [O.S. February 26] 1861) was a Ukrainian poet, artist and humanist. His literary heritage is regarded to be the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and, to a large extent, the modern Ukrainian language. Shevchenko also wrote in Russian and left many masterpieces as a painter and an illustrator.
Another picture of the Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian National Opera House is in a workshop.

This is a very well composed shot of this interesting opening in a splendid building. The two men leaning out of the opening not only give a real indication of the grand scale of the building but also of the size of the bust of Shevchenko. It is fortunate that the man in the red top is nearer to the camera as his fugure. albeit small, really anchors the whole composition.
Lovely colours, lots of interesting details and pin-sharp.

Hello Gert. First, I only read the title. Three men? Now I open the thumbnail and see all the details. It is the opera with the most famous poet of the Ukraine. I like your view on this subject. The contrast between the "big head" and the little people shows the real difference. Well seen and realized. Rgds wolfgang.

Much history there it seems, and Taras Shevchenko sounds like an amazing man! I love the workshop photo as well! Well seen with this combination of the "three men". Your travels around Eastern Europe are becoming very extensive! Fine work as always, warm regards,

Sympatic title well selecetd for this original composition with a pleasant contrast between the three men and an ideal framing. Expression, attitudes and details well collected.

A beautiful composition with these three persons sitting in the niche. You framed this moment beautifully with superb depth and light. A nice moment surely and presented masterfully. Tfs.

I didn't see the 2 mens in the thumbnail and I wondered why 3 mens. Funny shot with 3 differents looks and the scale contrast.

A fine capture of three serious men, with a natural framing. Good colours!

You're capturing well this arcitecture by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting to see one part of noble architecture. It seems to have given a good design and ornament. It's beautiful for the terrace with big arch shape. And, having decorated his statue as distinguished services to a country over art can be respected.

curiosa e simpatica immagine di questo monumento.
Le figure degli operai rompono l'austeritŕ del busto dello scrittore.
Molto indovinato il POV ed eccellente esecuzione tecnica.

Hello Gert, It looks as though Mr Shevchenko is keeping a watchful eye on things. Of course this shot is not only about the three men but also all the fine details in the building that surrounds them, all the details are clearly visible, well exposed. Well seen & realised.
Waylim (22355) 2011-11-15 16:56
Very nice shot of the statue and the arch window, the presence of the two men adds much interesting aspect as well as giving us a sense of scale, to realize just how big the statue really is. Good details of the wonderful details of the architecture.
siudzi (23879) 2011-11-17 7:09
A very eye-catching post. Well seen and cropped scene presented with great attention on details. Like it very much.
Angshu (51174) 2011-11-18 8:27
This actually is a great picture...the large head of Shevchenko seems to loom over the two men...all framed very effectively with the arched at a diagonal. Well done!
josepmarin (55027) 2011-11-21 1:16
a very well-select framing, to catch this scene of the men in the niche, with a big bust behind them, which offers us a strong graphical contrast.
I like the diagonal of the visual angle, that gives a nice perspective to the geometry of the architectural elements.
A good composition.
jmdias (45790) 2011-11-23 15:18
very interesting view, the huge niche is well framed and we have a sense of scale with these men. perfect light, framing and sharpness. a very interesting view. for coincidence I am posting now an image about Ukrainians in Brazil.

))) Amazing capture, Gert. Funny composition from usual daily life. One of trekkers has nick Shevchenko too. She is from Malaysia. An interesting note.
notrap (4688) 2012-02-21 12:50
everyone has already said everything about it, no need to repeat these POV and DOF words, but fact is, I like it and therefore my green smiley, too.

Street photography is sometimes about making the best of the situation to get teh shot, I reckon you have made the most of this opportunity. The hugh statue pretending to be part of the group and this is about the best of the three in perfect positioning and great they are completely oblivious to you. The colouring works a treat here and highlights the contrast between them and the way they stand out within the niche, adding such a flavour of the locale. This is a well spotted chance on which you have capitalised so well and precise timing. It's about street photography at its best, Congrats :))
ourania (12367) 2013-04-12 12:03
I like very much the way you 've adjusted this composition in the vertical frame and the perspective you gave it. The title is wonderful and connects the three men superbly. The famous author looks very serious and dynamic, the real men look serious and relaxed. Their closeness and identical postures give warmth, interest and rhythm to the image. The intricate architectural details frame the scene agreeably. Depth, sharpness and lighting are superb. The workshop picture offers additional information and has a very different mood. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
