Photographer’s Note

This old Hutsul man is the church guardian from the village of Ilcii, Verchovynsky district, Ivano-Frankivska oblast, Ukraine. He keeps the church key and gave me an opportunity to visit it during my last stay in Ukraine. As his speech was rather hard to understand, I couldn’t know his name. Untortunately.

The Hutsul is a highlanders ethnic group of Ukrainian origin. They live in the Carpathian valleys mainly in Zakarpatska and Ivano-Frankivska Oblast (Region) in south-western Ukraine close to the Romanian border. The group strictly preserves its folklore traditions and rituals which is clearly visible during ceremonies like weddings, funerals and religious holidays. Most of Hutsuls are sheep shepherds and spend a lot of their time working on vast pastures of Czarnohora mountain range.
