Photographer’s Note

This beautifully built memorial Commemorates the blocking of the harbour by Prince Menshikov the Commander in Chief of the Russian forces, by scuttling a number of ships across the port entrance during the opening phase of the investing of Sevastopol by the Allied Forces.

It was a very difficult decision for Menshikov to take. The Admirals, were much against the idea, their thinking was that they should take their fleet out to sea and fight the Allied fleet. This emotional option however did not sway Menshikov.

The crews and guns were taken from the ships and did sterling work in the bastions defending Sevastopol and bombarding the assaulting Allied Armies.

The Sailors also did much necessary work as medical orderlies and stretcher bearers, and their Commanding Admirals became heroes during the defence of Sevastopol

It took an American salvage company six years after the war to clear the harbour of the sunken ships.

It has become an ideal spot to sit and dream, eat and drink, and generally relax over a lovely bottle of Inkerman wine under the shades of the many picturesque and attractive restaurants and bars. The Cruise Liners dock here, and the Cruises are becoming more popular as time goes by.

As would be expected, monuments, places of interest and little markets abound here, as well as the touristy places of eating and drinking.
