[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Once upon a time, the Crimea was populated by tartars, and Bakhchisarai was their capital. It is now the only remaining place where you can still see this heritage. The Khan's Palace was started around 1550, and many additions were made over the centuries, until Catherine the Great acquired control of Crimea for Russia in 1783. The palace is partly Persian, Turkish and Italian in design of it's various parts. At one time there were 32 mosques Bakhchisarai, but after the Russians came they destroyed them all, except for one, in the Khan's Palace. The rest of the palace was preserved also, and a good thing too as it may be the most interesting place in all of the Crimea. It's not large but later standards, and there are no real grand facades or sweeping views of it that I can show you. It's really a cluster of buildings and additions added over many years. The beauty of this place is in the intricate details, lingering evidence of the culture and the artistry of the Tartars. This photo shows the gate to the palace, and as you can see, they weren't worried about defence when they built it! The design, the details, the beauty of the palace is quite amazing, even apart from the historical importance. Elaborate woodcarving and intricate designs make this a real must visit for anyone coming to the Crimea.

Hi Alvin! Wonderful "details" shot, it really captures the uniqueness of this place. I wish we saw more of these on TE. Your tight crop creates a dynamic iconic image featuring those interesting geometric patterns.

Well done!
Doug

Wow, such great colours, and beautiful shapes. They make the photograph stand out.

One of the better door / lock photographs I've seen lately.

Cheers

Alvin,
A really good detail - it's actually great to see you posting something "close-up" like this; and you found a particularly good composition which manages to show a lot in quite a space space.

Colin

An interesting departure to abstract from your normal landscape type images Alvin.

Natural looking colors (not overblown) and sharp detail.
Nice long vacation by the looks of it...

All the best Alvin!

Hi Alvin. It was smart to be drawn to the varied and rich colors. I like the intricate pattern you captured too. This looks a lot like modern art to me. tfs Alvin.
