Photographer’s Note

Urban village of Sharivka in the region of Bogoduhiv was the second stop during our two-day bike trip over old Ukrainian estates in Kharkiv oblast, the first one being Giyivka.

This landscape architectural complex was founded in 1800. In 1900 the new owner of the estate, sugar manufacturer Leopold Kenig, rebuilt the palace and reconstructed the park. In Soviet times there was a sanatorium for consumptives there. Two years ago the sanatorium was moved to another place and the reconstruction working started. As you can see in the picture, now the palace is in a pretty good shape, but the terraces, bridges and ponds are to be repaired yet.

I hope, that in three years, when Kharkiv is one of the four Ukrainian host cities (along with Donetsk, Kyiv and Lviv) for such a big international football event as Euro 2012, the landscape architectural complex in Sharivka will be fully ready to accept visitors from all over the world, who are interested not only in football. The distance between Kharkiv and Sharivka is about 60 km or three-hour ride by bicycle.
