Photographer’s Note

This is Krasnokutskiy Arboretum, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Ukraine and one of the most interesting examples of Ukrainian landscape architecture. It was founded in 1793 by Ivan Ivanovich Karazin, the first Ukrainian botanist, at his family estate of Osnovintsi (now a part of Krasnokutsk). The arboretum was the final stop of our two-day bike trip over old Ukrainian estates in Kharkivska oblast.

In the picture you see the upper pond with the island of Love, which is believed to be very good for kissing. Around this and another pond about 350 species of trees and bushes from all over the world grow and are the biosphere for many animals. Scientists even found an absolutely new species of insects there, which was called Exochus karazinii Tolkaniz in honor of the arboretum founder’s father Ivan Nazarovich Karazin.
