The steam engine DFB1 "Furkahorn" at Gletsch station - the presently most westerly end of the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway (Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke) - is getting ready for the afternoon pull over the Furka pass to Realp in the Swiss canton Uri.

This engine, which once belonged to the FOB (Furka Oberalp Bahn) railway company, was brought back from Vietnam (via Hamburg and Meiningen in Germany) in 1990 and began service in July 1993.

Starting at 1760 m (5774 ft) the line ascents at a maximum gradient of 118 per mille to 2160 m (7087 ft) and then descends to 1420 m (4659 ft) and the journey is one hour and 45 minutes long. Highly popular among young and old, a seat reservation is most certainly recommended.

Work is in progress to extend the line to Oberwald (see WS) in the canton Wallis/Valais - thus covering the whole distance of the Furka Basis-tunnel but new dates are regularly set for completion of the 17,7 kms (11 miles) of railway.
