Photographer’s Note

The Tobelbach is a small tributary of the Töss (itself a tributary of the Rhine) and in a short distance, roughly between Ehrikon and Rikon, it drops over three waterfalls while running through a beautiful wooded gorge, the geology of which is a soft layer of conglomerate over sandstone. The conglomerate is easily eroded by the water and this has given these lower falls their characteristic shape. However, the underlying sandstone is much more resistant.

This little stream is prone to heavy flooding and further downstream the riverbanks have been supported with unsightly stone blocks. The power of these floods can be seen in the tree that has become lodged against the falls, which was evidently uprooted and carried downstream until it could go no further...
