Photographer’s Note

Today is the kick off of the UEFA EURO 2008 Cup, co-organized by Austria and Switzerland. I'm not particularly a soccer fan, but Geneva being one of the hosting cities, we've been living to the rhythm of this competition for several weeks already during the prepartion of this month long celebration. In addition to being the venue to three matches, the city has also set up giant screens where all matches will be shown and also fan zones where there will be concerts and various entertainment.

End of April, the Genevans discovered this giant soccer ball, 15 meters in diameter and filled up with 1400 cubic meters of helium. It was intentionally meant to float 10 meters above the Jet d'Eau, the city landmark, but that was without taking into account the winds. When winds are stronger than 30 km/h the ball must be brought down near the lake's surface and attached to a barge, as on this picture.

The result is that during the first month, the ball was constantly brought up and down, sometimes several times a day, until a stronger gust made it burst. It was quickly sent back to England (where it was fabricated) for repair and was put back in place two days ago... just in time for the opening match!

I haven't yet had the chance to see admire it above the Jet d'Eau with a blue sky so here's a picture I took when it was sunny, but windy.

You can see this balloon live by having a look at the webcam (last 30 minutes animation).
