Photographer’s Note

Spring is on its way! Leaves are appearing; blossom is budding; the birds are singing. Here at 1200m though the journey to spring is longer and slower. The earth is slower to warm, snow is still lying and the walk is sometimes arduous. But along this stretch the path becomes clearer. The summit is almost in sight and spring is just over the hill...

A photo taken during a walk in the Jura last weekend – my first B&W posting, so any comments, good or bad, are most appreciated! As a WS I’m posting the original colour view.

The road to Spring? I'll take it! The weather here in Utah has been very cold lately and I need some sun. :-)
Snow usually makes for good B&W photos in my opinion, and I think you chose the right version to upload. What I really like about this photo is the composition. I like how the pathway leads our eyes to the hiker, then we follow the ridge of the hill to the tree, and the tree points us towards the sky. The small size of the hiker in the photo is also nice as it makes nature look bigger.

a nice composition with the way leading to the guy walking here.
about the bw, it could be more contrasty for my taste.

Je suis particulièrement fan de cette composition avec un bel équilibre d'ensemble et une belle rigueur dans le cadrage. L'exposition sur la neige est parfaitement maitrisée et la présence humaine est du plus bel effet, bravo à toi j'aime beaucoup!

Hello Susanna,
Indeed your first b&w as far as i know and have to admit it looks pretty good. the contrast between snow, tree and sky is very good, while the hiker gives a nice focal point to it...i like it, very nice.

Nice and simple- but its still an effective shot. The range of darks to white is nice - and youve done a good composition.

Susanna,
this is the raod to spring? Oh my, that still seems to be a dreadfull walk ... ;-) Nice composition with the road bending in daigonal over the whole image from the right bottom to the left top and having the hiker up in that corner. The tree gives a good balance to this. B&W is the right choice!
