Photographer's Note

This photo is a detail of contrasting shapes between the round columns on the main entrance of geneva’s cathedral, St-Pierre, and the rectangular facade of one of the buildings in the square in front of the cathedral (Cour St-Pierre).

Built between 1160 and 1289, St Peter’s Cathedral is surprisingly small. Even more surprising is its combination of Romanesque, Gothic, and neo-classical styles. The neo-classical façade was inaugurated in 1756, following a project designed by Benedetto Alfieri, first architect of Charles Emmanuel III, duc of Savoy and King of Sardenia.

The columns are made in pink marble coming from the Chablais vaudois.
