Hundertwasser in Switzerland
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
First time I was in this place I was driving a car. I saw the stripes of the zebra crossing and I was very surprised to see them in such bad conditions in a country like Switzerland where everything is so clean, straight and well maintained.
Some our later, driving back I saw this house and then I understood. The stripes are a tribute to the artist that designed this house, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who like the great Antonio Gaudi avoids the use of straight lines.
Hundertwasser was born in Vienna in December 1928 and died in February 2000. He was born as Friedrich (Fritz) Stowasser and changed this name to Friedensreich (which has a double meaning, "rich or full of peace" or "Empire of peace") Hundertwasser ("hundred water" because sto means one-hundred in Czech language).
Other names he used are Regentag (rainy day) or Dunkelbunt (dark but multicoloured).
As said he is compared with the Spanish architecht Antonio Gaudi but Hundertwasser was not an architecht. He was sculptor and painter. In painting he is compared with Gustav Klimt.
Though he decored many houses. The most of them are in Vienna and Germany. Part of his work can be seen in other countries like Japan an New Zealand (Public Toilet in 1999). He loved New Zealand and his watch was always set to New Zealand time. There he was buried. |
