Photographer’s Note
Another image from the cattle shows currently taking place all over Appenzell and focused on the nice traditional clothes the shepherds wear on these outings.
This one also shows Appenzell has a loooong way to go before joining the growing list of cantons banning smoking in public places, there were lots of people including his parents around this little boy and nobody found that any shocking... But smoking belongs to culture here ;-)

Hi Jean Yves!
On my way home from work I heard in the radio that kids between 12 and 16 smoke less than in the last years.....
But he is less than 12.....
Here i like the fashion more than the expression at his face,he looks not very happy or satisfied.
Anyway a nice portrait.
Regards,leo

Hello Jean. A good shot. My appreciation for it. With the pipe, the little boy looks like an old man. And then the pompous face. Very nice. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hello JY,
I have mixed feelings observing this picture. Being a pipe smoker I should acknowledge that our old tradition survives. But seing a real, burning pipe in the mouth of such a young boy is terrible! My shock is only partly mildered by the nice clothes and excellent photo. Right in the heart of Europe - unbelievable!
Best whishes

Hi Jean Yves,
What do we have to say about the culture of the Appenzellers? Traditions are often worth to become honoured, but sometimes it is better to break with the past. In spite of the endearing picture you could make, but the traditional clothes can do without pipe.

Bonjour, JY.

Beau portrait.

Hi Jean Yves!
What a cute kid and you captured him well. Looking at this face, I think he's probably thinking, why did they make me put this stupid stinky pipe in my mouth!
Thanks and take good care,
Linda

Hi Jean Yves
A very nice candid shot of this young chap. It's too bad that he is starting the road to mouth cancer so soon in his life. Nicely done.

Hello Jean-Yves,

I belong to the group shocked by this, and it does take a lot to shock me! It is incredibly irresponsible to start such a young lad on the road to an early grave, in a country that does have all the facts. I won't shoot the messenger. He does look cute in his traditional clothes.

Dear JY
What? The boy is smoking a pipe?
Cultural habits can and should be changed, before the harms from tobacco use. The boy is beautiful and the picture is excellent.
Have a nice day

Hoi Jean Yves! Tolles Bild ... Gruss + aen guaetae ... Barbara.

Bonsoir Jean Yves
A superb portrait of the underage smoker. I think the legal age in Australia is 16. Like Europe & Canada, recent legislation & increased government taxes, are making it progressively harder, for smokers in public places in Australia. A fine daily life scene with a superb shallow dof, & very good colour & sharpness.

Hello JY,
After the man and the woman, a boy with the traditional suite, a very nice composed photo. An interesting, unusual, unhealthy but traditional habit for a boy to smoke.
Have a nice evening, Vasilis.

bonjour Jean-Yves

Wonderful picture it is perfect by the boy's face expression ..the colors..wonderful contrast...But should he actually be so "grown up" at this age?
I l think it is amazing if a picture not only can make others to enjoy the scene and colors but also makes people THINK if all traditions should be saved and protected :)
Hugs from Sweden,
Marina

hahaha! a tiny prototype of our dear mr. mesut ilgim!
some people must survive on this incresingly getting sterile planet, who believe in the joy and charisma of smoking a pipe. not everything is health :PPP
(yet, i would definitely go mad if i saw my own son doing this. isn't it hypocrisy?...)

Hello Jean Yves,
What a great capture! An excellent portrait with a great DOF and beautiful colours.
At first, when I saw the tab, I could not believe that it was actual smoke coming out of the pipe, and still find it hard to believe that the parents would give him real tobacco to smoke, but I guess old habits die hard. He seems to be enjoying the feeling of looking grown-up, he's got the "pondering the world" expression down well!
Cheers from Prague, Dasha

Grussi Jean,
Ahhh, so cute this little big boy. I love it. Stunning sharpness and clarity, beautiful and brilliant colors, typically swiss red with all the embroily of flower and pattern. That is one thing that is so good about keeping tradition, but yet thing don't change much either, just like they still vote raising their hand, can woman vote yet?

Salut Jean Yves
