The Devils's Bridge in the Schoellenen
The Schoellenene is a gorge close to the Gotthard-massif in the canton of Uri. The river Reuss is crossing this very wild place which had been in ancient times a very dangerous place to cross. It was situated on the North-South transportation-axis, between N and S-Europe.
The first bridges had been built in the Middle-Ages, at first in wood (The Devils's bridge,1230), later in stone.
The Devils's bridge which you see in front of this picture had been rebuilt in stone at the beginning of the 16th century and again in the 19th century.
The name Devil's bridge (Teufelsbrücke)comes from a legend telling that the bridge was so difficult to build that the devil was ready to help against the first soul who would cross the bridge. Some smart peasant sent a billygoat and the devil was outsmatred.
Today this bridge isnt used any more-

Hi Anne,
An ideal POV to show the skill of the men making road, tunnels and bridges through tough terraine. The clarity and textures are appealing. Good shot. TFS. Murray.
