Pilatusbahn is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world with a maximum gradient of 48%. The line rises from Alpnachstad by the lake Vierwaldstättersee to Mount Pilatus at an altitude of 2132 m. The line is about4.6 km long and climbs vertical distance of 1629 m, and has rail gauge of 800 mm. It was opened in 1889. To handle steep gradients safely, unique Locher rack system was developed. On this system rack is a flat bar with symmetrical, horizontal teeth. Horizontal pinion engage the centrally-mounted bar, both driving the locomotive and keeping it centered on the track.
