le Pont de la Chapelle (Kapellbrücke) Luzern's second covered bridge, once housed the town's water mill zigzags across the Reuss. This bridge, which was constructed in 1408, is decorated with a series of medieval-style 17th Century plague paintings (over 75..plus those that burned in 1993= approx 120 paintings) by Kaspar Meglinger titled Dance of Death. It has a small chapel in the middle that was added in 1568.
The underside of the roof houses the series of the macabre "Dance of Death" paintings. Under the gables are verses that were adapted from those written by a person named Muller in Thalwil for J.R. Meyer's "Dance of Death". These begin at the northern bank side of the river with a little verse:
All living things that fly or leap
Or crawl or swim or run or creep
Fear death, yet they find no spot
In all the world where death is not
The sequence of images show a grinning skeleton leading; kings, gallant princes, lawmen, nuns, merchants, prostitutes, peasants and maidens alike to their inevitable fate. The final panel predictably enough, shows a majestic Christ vanquishing a bony skeleton.
The morbid graphics depict that all are equal in death and were completed between 1625 and 1635. Every inhabitant of Luzern who crosses the river by this bridge sees this message.
If someone can describe me what it is written in german below the painting, it would be interesting to know more... i took a few other pictures of this famous bridge, wich was very interesting and nice to look at...

Nice piece of history and architecture, I do appreciate that you exposed the roof for tha pinting rendering the people overexpose, it was either one. I would have made the same choice. Although perhaps a flash tilted upward may have helped.

Belle prise de vue de ces peintures.
Mais c'est le Pont de la Chapelle (Kapellbrücke) et pas le Pont du Moulin (Spreuerbrücke) qui a brûlé en 1993.
