As I promised, I am going to post at least a few photos shot at the Luzern Carnival - Luzerner Fasnacht 2013.
This is the 1st photo in the series. It was shot during the opening ceremony of the Carnival.
Officially, the Carnival is opened on Dirty Thursday by Brother Fritsch and his followers at 5 AM.
By 5 AM tens of thousands of people gather around the fountain on Kapellplatz (which is right next to the hotel where I was staying).
I was very excited about the ceremony as I heard that its very important to catch an orange (which Brother Fritsch and his followers would throw to the gathered people) for good luck :)
I went out of the hotel every half an hour since 3:30 AM, hoping to find the best place nearest to the fountain - to shoot photos and catch an orange :)
But the place was empty! only a few sellers were preparing their goods for sale.
When I came out of the hotel to the fountain at 4:30 AM and asked a seller where all the people were (as the opening ceremony was about to start) she answered with a smile: Dont worry, they WILL come! thousands of them!
this time I did not go to the hotel and remained outside, but it was snowing pretty heavily!
and THEY came thousands of them, they flooded the whole little place, all of a sudden, wearing incredible, crazy, picturesque costumes and perhaps I was the only one who was not wearing a carnival costume :( But next time perhaps I will :)
then at around 5 AM the lights went out and the place deepened into total darkness.
an then at 5 AM we heard a big BANG - a cannon fired and thus signalled the beginning of the Carnival.
a few minutes later Brother Fritsch and his followers came accompanied by musicians..
and a few more minutes later they started throwing oranges to the people :)
You can only imagine how I was managing to shoot photos, holding the camera with one hand, at the same time trying to catch a flying orange with the other hand! :))
One orange hit my camera but fortunately missed the lens!
Guess if I managed to catch an orange? ;-)

Boa noite Elena
When I see photos of Carnival of other countries, I think how crazy, but beautiful is the Brazilian Carnival.
Very nice photo.

Superb festival photo. I love the mood created by the lamp backlight. The snowfall/rain (?) in backlight is very exciting and contributes to the attractiveness of the photo. I note that the photo is a slightly grainy because of the high ISO. I believe that other camera settings and another lens could have been a better choice. I am well aware though that you often do not have time to think about that. If you are not quick enough with your the photo opportunity will be gone forever. Happy New Year and have nice week!
P.S. I note with great pleasure that your appetite for posting photos seems to have returned

I've never happened on the place when the Swiss have their most original events.
Those masks are pretty impressive in the darkness of night. And low angle emphasizes that. Flow of snow looks beautiful on this, the backlight is just right for showing that.
