Traditional hay poles around a barn in Wengen. Making hay by drying hay on poles used to be the most common method for preserving hay for cattle for winter months, especially on Nordic countries and alpine regions. Nowadays modern mechanised methods have replaced this labour intensive work. But hay poles are not that ancient history, I have done my share of haymaking too.

I never did any haymaking because I was allergic, but I think my brothers did - and hated it! A dusty hard work. But how nice it looks. Unfortunately this is now becoming a rare sight in our countries. This is a nice capture of what now looks very old-fashioned. A fine hillside with the nice barn and the beautiful tree.

Hello Kari ,
it is very rare to see this kind of scene in western Europe . Still common in countries like Romania or Bulgaria .
A beautiful testimony of the old time .
I like a lot .

So you where in Switzerland then, fleeing the extreme heat in Finland I suppose?
Lovely scene that captures the essence of rural Switzerland in a nutshell. The old barn with the hay stacks is lovely and well placed in context with its surroundings.

This way of drying hay looks much better in a picture than those modern hay-rolls packed in white plastic. A very pleasant scene here with the little house on the slope and tree at the side. A very attractive picture.
