Cows on a high alp near First, with a chain of high mountains over the Lüschental valley opposite. This was taken from fairly near the top of the cable car line up from Grindelwald, with the Schreckhorn opposite across the valley.
Transhumance in the Alps, or seasonal migration between valley and high pastures, is a traditional practice that has shaped much of the landscape in the Alps, as without it, most areas below 2000 m would be forests. While tourism and industry contribute today much to Alpine economy, seasonal migration to high pastures is still practiced in Switzerland. In some places, cattle are taken care of by local farmer families who move to higher places. In others, this job is for herdsmen who are employees of the cooperative owning the pastures.
Most Alpine pastures are below 2,400 m, all are below 2,800 m. The higher regions not suitable for transhumance are known as the High Alps. In Switzerland, about 380,000 cattle including 130,000 milk cows as well as 200,000 sheep are in summer on high pastures. Milk from cows here is usually made into local cheese specialities, handmade using traditional methods and tools. Alpine pastures amount to 35 percent of Swiss farmland and 13 percent of the entire country. The total population of mountain farmers has decreased to about 43,000 (in 1980) from 160,000 (in 1910). The farmers that are involved in mountain farming only make up about 15% of the total farming population in Switzerland.

Hello Will ,
Classical post card , may be , but this is the kind of view I enjoy to see and to capture . The position of the two cows is excellent . The DOF is superb . Amazing effect of the clouds rolling over the white summits in the BG .

A delightful shot.
In more than one way, these cows seem to be in Heaven!
The f/g details are sharp and well saturated; even the little blue alpine flowers are visible.
There is a great sense of depth to the mountains but, for me, it is the swirling clouds that give the greatest impact to the sense of the location.
Have a great day,

an interesting shot with these cows in such high altitude. The composition is nice with those cows in FG and beautiful snow capped mountains in BG... Great light and endless depth with f/11. A nice shot indeed. Tfs.

Hi dear Will, how are you?
Great Alps image via so sharp and clear prensetation.
Perfect framework and composition as usual. They seem to be calm and tamed. Mountains half coverd by clouds are also nice to see.
Thanks a lot for your sharing and have a good day! Takero

Evocative shot Will.... where's the chocolate bar? I love your composition with its crisp and immediate FG and then the deeper view of snow-capped mountains and cloudy sky. The other day Nicou posted a clock which I equate with Switzerland, your post is another which does the same. Lovely. Warm regards rosemary

Not often you get to call a picture that title and mean it! Great capture of this very beautiful mountainous scene, the clouds are almost like smoke. And once again, I have the urge for some Milka chocolate. (I know now its not from here, but their marketing department are good!)
Have a great weekend.
All the best

an image simple and clean, fabulous background and two subjects that may teach us a lot about the art of relaxation...

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Now I know why Swiss cheese is so good :) What a view for these cows and you have nailed this shot! Nicely done.

I think cows are cute, and this pair looks very relaxed in front of the wonderful mountain scenery. :-) I like how the cow on the left is looking directly at you, while the other one is turned away. These cows must enjoy the landscape, and their calm way of life. :-)
ktanska (22654) 2013-08-25 1:09
One of the charms of Switzerland. Local cows that that follow bypassing hikers with vaguely curious look.
High viewpoint shows background snowy slopes almost on the same level. Sunny summer day makes this just lovely.
williewhistler (9845) 2013-08-25 3:59
so,so Swiss,I could almost be there, the contented cows make a lovely subject before the snow covered mountains, crisp and clear it`s a lovely shot.
KristinsCamera (1895) 2013-08-25 18:29
This is such gorgeous scenery that it hardly looks real. I can just feel the cow on the left has a question on its mind, as in ~ what are you doing up here?!
Charming, and as I often say of the lucky cows who get to live on the mountains of western North Carolina ~ not a bad life :)

I like this very much and it just shouts 'Switzerland' with the mountain peaks, cows with their bells, and a lush meadow. The clouds are just perfect and add atmosphere. A brillaint low view point with one cow making eye contact. Very sharp and well exposed - I can almost breathe that crisp mountain air.
Best wishes, Ann

Nice "wild life photography" :)
Even without the milkies, the landscape speaks loudly for itself. Was really worth climbing.
emka (64142) 2013-08-26 14:45
You could sell this photo to Milka. Amazing view of these cows. Were you also lying in the grass? Nice blue flowers in the grass, maybe it is gentiana. Superb shot.
ACL1978 (6497) 2013-08-26 20:13
I love the crispness of this image, Will - the kind of clarity you can really only get at high altitudes, I think. Captured brilliantly as well, with the cows arranged nicely in the sideways sunlight. The clouds behind make a beautiful, almost surreal backdrop. Thanks!
abmdsudi (32471) 2013-08-29 1:52
An idyllic pastoral scene so very well captured and beautifully composed, this wouldn't be Swiss without the snow peaks which is aptly in this position as a fine backdrop. The cows are extremely eye-catching against the surrounding, depicting such a gentle landscape which typifies the local flavours. Remarkable peaceful shot, Congrats, TFs

Hi Will. My compliments for this great photo. The title is well chosen. I particularly like the peaceful atmosphere amidst the mountains. Really very beautiful.

This seems taken from an advertisement to Milka chocolates! These cows are really nice and here you got a very good shot. It looks perfect on the beta version because the big size lets us see lots of details. I really like the clouds and the mountains in background. Looks almost a 3D photo!
gervaso (9247) 2013-09-18 4:56
Wonderful typical scene of Switzerland with the cows resting in front of those wonderful moutains in the background half covered by the clouds! Excellent light, colors and depth! Beautiful composition!
