Photographer's Note

After a 4h hike from Wasserauen up to the Ebenalp, one is rewarded with a breathtaking view over the rolling hills of the Appenzeller land towards the lake of Constanze and Germany on the opposite shore.
With a population of a mere 15'000, the canton Appenzell is the least populated canton in Switzerland and one of the most conservative too. It was in 1990 only that the Swiss gouvernement finally overruled a voting by the Landsgemeinde (an assembly of every male citizen in the town square to vote on any pending issue by holding ones hand aloof) and granted women the right to vote also. The Landsgemeinde still exists today even if women are participating now .....! Being married to a Finnish women, where women where granted the right to vote in 1906, you can imagine how strange that was to me.
