Some of us are compulsively, obsessively addicted to TV. We devour all those crap shows, soap operas, mind-numbing so-called debates on politics, football, religion and pirvate lives of celebrities. Our TVs are on almost 24/7. We have our dinner on a tray in front of the TV, zapping from one dull channel to another. We fall asleep watching the reruns of silly sitcoms for the umpteenth time. We fool ourselves saying that we just watch the Discovery Channel, not the other lousy ones, while what we watch on Discovery is no different than violent crime stories and the plight of the victims of a natural disaster. We feed our souls with never-ending romances, scandals, conflicts and news commentaries by 'experts' on TV. We turn into couch potatoes, gain weight and lose our sense of judgement. We can't keep our eyes off of it; it is bewitching, hypnotizing, warding off our pathetic loneliness. What Percy Tannenbaum of the University of California at Berkeley says reveals the compulsive nature of this addiction in a funny but undeniably true way: "Among life's more embarrassing moments have been countless occasions when I am engaged in conversation in a room while a TV set is on, and I cannot for the life of me stop from periodically glancing over to the screen. This occurs not only during dull conversations but during reasonably interesting ones just as well."

And what about me? I am moderately addicted to some shows, but I don't watch them any more as regularly as I used to. I'm more of a dvd person. I don't even turn on the TV for days. Thanks to my neighbour, who I think is either a little deaf despite her young age or simply inconsiderate, I can catch up with what's going on on TV. )))

I was going to post this later, but when I saw Rigoletto's latest photo, I thought this could be a nice complementary - though it's not nearly as good as his.

merhaba,
her şeyin tam anlamıyla yerli yerinde olması ve kesimi nefis olmuş... tebrikler...

Ah yes, trailer-trash TV. 'Awful Winfrey' and 'Trashia' - staple diet of the disaffected and hard of thinking. Watch and think 'my life ain't so bad afterall' - when actually it's worse. At least the subject of the TV progamme has had the experience that caused the programme to be made and yet the viewer can only live their life vicariously. Life? What life?

Great picture Fusun. Excellent composition - very minimalist and stylish. The guy can't look at the 'art' as he's beguiled by the 312th re-run of a programme that probably should never have been made.....

Paul (;^))

Fusun,
I really don't like to compare shots from different members, because everyone has a very distincte way of looking into the world and capturing moments. Well, you mentioned Deniz last shot and their I went to see it before I write you a critique for your post. Not quite sure what you meant with his is much better. No it isn't. It's just different! Besides that you can't compare B&W with a colored one. I think that the compulsively, obsessively addicted to TV came better out in yours. There is really nothing else that this person is devoting his attention. Even for me as a spectator of this shot there is only one thing - to share the moment with the guy and watch TV, although my compulsively, obsessively addiction is TE and photography! ;-)
Peter

euh... OK if you replace the V by E it works I guess ;-)
Another unusul image of Switzerland but that describes well something characteristic of our societies.
Have a nice day JY

selamlar

Hi Füsun!
Very good application of rigolettianism. Place, subject and composition remind me strongly of many of his shots. Well seen and captured. Your excellent note fits perfectly with your subject.
Cheers
Andreas

Well done!
